Department Description:

The Cystic Fibrosis/Pulmonary Research and Treatment Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill goal is to cure CF lung disease. The CF Center projects are generally designed to define the pathogenesis of cystic fibrosis and other pulmonary disorders and to understand the functions of the respiratory epithelium, and to develop therapies or therapeutic directions for diseases of the lung.

Position Description:

The primary purpose of this position is to assist the principal investigator and other staff in planning, developing and executing scientific research to achieve specific goals as directed in Dr. Randell’s Laboratory. The laboratory is mainly using cell biology approaches to address the pathogenesis, prevention and treatment of several lung diseases. Scientific techniques include but are not limited to: Cell Biology (aseptic technique, tissue culture, FACS); Molecular Biology (protein analysis: isolation/purification, quantification, SDS-PAGE, western blotting, ELISA; nucleic acid analysis: isolation/purification, quantification, agarose gel electrophoresis, qPCR; expression cloning: transformation, transfections, transduction); Microscopy (antibody generation and purification, immunohistochemistry, widefield and confocal microscopy). The employee will participate in animal studies.. A partial component of this position is general laboratory management including participation in daily operations including ordering and record keeping and compliance with health and safety procedures. Computer skills include, but not limited to, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, and presentation software packages.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

The individual must be able to accurately carry out a variety of experimental protocols, that include isolation and aseptic culture of various rodent and human cell types; isolation and detection of whole cell and cytosolic/nuclear proteins by western blots and ELISAs; In addition to having competency in the use of multiple different types of laboratory equipment, the individual must be able to use computer software associated with the analysis and presentation of data (i.e., statistical, imaging software, etc.). The individual must have a drivers license to use the Zipcar for retrieving research samples. The individual should be a competent communicator and be able to prepare data for presentation and to interact with students/PI’s from other laboratories. The employee must be facile with sterile tissue culture technique. Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills are essential. Ability to work closely with other researchers, train and supervise students or new members of the laboratory staff is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Applicant should have the ability to perform computer data entry and data base organization. Learn new techniques and derive information and novel procedures from the literature. Individuals should be experienced with, and/or able to be trained to work with mice, including detailed tissue dissection and creation of primary cell cultures.
