Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the Nonproliferation Review Editor, the Nonproliferation Review Managing Editor is responsible for the timely production of the journal and may perform other editorial duties as necessary. This is a part-time staff position.

Essential Functions:
• Managing a double-blind peer review process, tracking the status of all submissions, recruiting reviewers, ensuring timely completion of the review process, notifying authors of the results, and working with authors as needed to revise and resubmit their work for publication.
• Copy-editing and proofreading all articles accepted for publication.
• Serving as a liaison with the journal’s publisher.
• Assisting the Editor with promotional efforts (e.g., organizing events or drafting blog posts).
• Creating and maintaining the annual editorial calendar in consultation with the publisher and ensuring the timely publication of each issue.

General Responsibilities:
• Assisting the Editor in identifying prospective authors, soliciting submissions (including book reviews), and developing timely concepts for special issues or special sections.
• Copy-editing and proofreading all material accepted for publication, while maintaining a high standard of editorial excellence.
• Corresponding with authors on editorial queries and administrative matters.
• Overseeing the Correspondence, Contributors, and Index sections of the journal.
• Developing and ensuring adherence to the editorial calendar.
• Overseeing the annual Doreen and Jim McElvany Nonproliferation Challenge (organizing the panel of judges, tallying votes, announcing outcomes, facilitating payment of prizes).
• Maintaining and revising as necessary the journal’s style guide.


Qualified candidates will have at a minimum a bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English, Political Science, or a related field. A master’s degree is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Outstanding English editing and writing skills, and familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat.
• Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to self-direct, to work well with others, and to meet deadlines in a frequently challenging environment.
• Ability to organize and multitask.

• At least five years of experience in editing or managing a publication.
• At least five years of experience working in nonproliferation, arms control, or disarmament.

Physical Demands:

Position requires light to moderate physical effort and the ability to work at a computer keyboard for extended periods of time.
