International Student Advisor, Office of Global Services - Georgetown University Main Campus

International Student Advisor, Office of Global Services - Georgetown University Main Campus

The Office of Global Services (OGS) provides a wealth of services to Georgetown's international community, including immigration advising and cultural and educational support. The International Student Advisor, is an entry level Advisor position. It is one of eight "Designated School Officials" (DSOs), who implement Georgetown's F-1 non-immigrant visa program, by providing service through immigration advisement, government document processing, data management, personal counseling, and other support services to the F-1 international student population. This position advises by email, phone, Zoom, one-on-one appointments, and group sessions to assist F-1 international students and their dependents with academic, immigration, social and personal issues as appropriate. The International Student Advisor has a direct impact on the admission, continued enrollment, and employment eligibility of non-immigrant students at Georgetown University, as well as the University's compliance with the growing body of regulations governing international students.

Reporting to the Associate Director of International Student Services, the International Student Advisor has duties that include but are not limited to:

Student Advisement/Counseling/Document Processing
  • Advises F-1 students and alumni, academic units and University offices on federal immigration regulations that affect an international student's immigration status, cultural adjustment, progress toward degree, and access to immigration benefits.
  • Counsels students and academic departments on the intersection of US immigration regulations and University policies.
  • Accesses both the ISSM database and SEVIS, the Student and Exchange Visitor's web-based electronic application to create and maintain student records and issue immigration documents throughout the student's F-1 program.
  • Supports, implements and facilitates all student orientations and orientation presentations.
  • Advises a large student caseload via phone, email, zoom, group meetings, presentations and one on one appointments.


Federal Regulatory Compliance Responsibilities
  • Monitors and reports on students' F-1 immigration compliance according to SEVP and DHS requirements.
  • Determines initial immigration document eligibility and eligibility for any F-1 related benefits throughout the program of study and any post-completion work period.
  • Reviews and continuously updates knowledge of F-1 regulations, SEVIS functionality, ISSM and Banner interactions, SEVP and USCIS policy, as well as NAFSA Association best practices.
  • Synthesizes and clearly communicates F-1 regulations as well as any regulatory changes to University stakeholders.


Liaison with University Department and Non-University Organizations
  • Maintains active and clear communication with academic departments and University offices about immigration issues and procedural changes that affect their student body.
  • Advocates for international students and exchange visitors in their dealings with off-campus government agencies including but not limited to: the State Department Visa Office, the Department of Homeland Security, the State Department's Office of Exchange Visitor Programs, Department of Motor Vehicles and the Social Security Administration.


Professional Development and Training
  • Stays current with a fast-paced and rapidly changing immigration climate by reading weekly immigration publications, listserv discussions and internet notifications from SEVIS and other regulatory bodies.
  • Attends weekly advisor meetings.
  • Attends NAFSA conferences, workshops or trainings to expand immigration knowledge or develop relevant skills, when funding is available.
  • Attends local meetings of International Student and Scholar Advisors to maintain a professional network for the exchanges of ideas and procedures which enhance his/her performance.


Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree
  • 1 to 2 years of significant experience working with international students issues, either in a graduate program, in an international office or through work with cultural exchange programs
  • Familiarity with F-1 student immigration regulations
  • U.S. citizenship or permanent residency (to comply with the U.S. Government requirements for issuing student immigration documents) is required for this position
  • Experience that demonstrates sensitivity to and acceptance of personal and cultural differences in people, and the ability to relate well to students from diverse cultural and educational backgrounds
  • Attention to detail and the ability to express him/herself clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing
  • Some of the responsibilities of this position may require work outside of normal business hours such as in evenings or on weekends in support of divisional programmatic or outreach objectives
  • Creativity with and experience in public presentations


Preferred qualifications
  • An academic specialization with an international focus such as cross-cultural communications
  • Proficiency in one or more foreign languages
  • Study, employment, or residence in another country or extensive travel outside the United States
  • Previous employment in an educational institution or an agency dealing with international educational exchange
  • Familiarity with the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) and Ellucian ISSM
