Job Description:

The operations manager for the Randell Research Center (RRC) on Pine Island, Florida, serves in a broad, supervisory capacity for a 69 acre archaeological park and research/education public facility that is a division of the Florida Museum of Natural History (FLMNH) at the University of Florida. The FLMNH serves as the State of Florida’s official Museum of Natural History and the Randell Research Center is an important extension of the Museum’s activities in southwest Florida. The operations manager is an employee of the University of Florida and reports to a Curator at the FLMNH.

This position holds very diverse responsibilities related to maintenance of the RRC and organizing education and public outreach activities. Working with FLMNH curators, the manager will facilitate research on the archaeology and ecology of southwest Florida; some prior knowledge of these topics will be greatly beneficial. The RRC is strongly dedicated to public outreach, and preferred candidates will have experience in implementing a formal education curriculum. In addition, the successful candidate will supervise the operation of a small retail store, a visitor center, as well as buildings and grounds maintenance that includes invasive plant species removal and native habitat development. Individuals with experience in operations and management, particularly for cultural and natural history lands, organizations, centers, trusts, agencies, etc., including parks, nature centers, museums, historical sites, are also encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Actively develops public outreach and outreach materials, including lectures, courses, exhibit materials, and a quarterly newsletter.

  • Oversees the daily operations of the RRC, including the direct supervision of 5-6 individuals involved with the retail store and building and grounds maintenance and 2-4 involved with education and outreach programming.

  • Assists staff with daily activities as needed, including cleaning and upkeep of building facilities, and outdoor labor on native plant and invasive species projects.

  • Administers a budget and collaborates with FLMNH staff to develop an annual expense and income forecast.

  • Writes and administer grants, produces reports and maintains communication and relationships with members and donors.

  • Recruits, trains, and supervises volunteers.

  • Works closely with FLMNH curators to develop policies and procedures that promote education and research.

  • Directs and manages archaeological collections related to ongoing research.

  • Regularly reports to a FLMNH supervisory curator about operational issues and problems.

  • Responsible for monitoring the work environment of assigned area to ensure compliance with the University non-discrimination and workplace harassment policies by reporting alleged violations to senior management in a timely manner.

Expected Salary:

Starting salary $57,500.00, commensurate with education and experience.

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area and three years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
