SUMMARY:

The Professional Counselor II – Outreach & Prevention Coordinator provide counseling services to assist students in maximizing their potential for personal and academic success. Initiates a comprehensive mental health and well-being educational outreach program. Develops a prevention educational strategy with regard to suicide and substance misuse and abuse. Exhibit a commitment to a developmental model by initiating and implementing interventions that promote a healthy campus environment and meet the mental health needs of the University community.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Initiates a comprehensive mental health and well-being educational outreach program utilizing various marketing strategies to reach all students.
  • Provides individual, group, and couples counseling.
  • Conducts intakes, screenings, and psychological assessments.
  • Engages in client staffing, case management, consultation and referral.
  • Provides crisis intervention, crisis assessment, and consults with the director as needed.
  • Engages in program development, educational outreach, and evaluation. Creates and delivers educational outreach programs on miscellaneous mental health topics.
  • Works collaboratively with internal and external colleagues as part of a multi-disciplinary mental health team.
  • Consults with faculty and staff regarding services for students.
  • Engages in professional development to maintain licensure.
  • Provides service to the University through involvement in committees/initiatives.
  • Utilizes Electronic Medical Records System to maintain client records in accordance with HIPAA and FERPA regulations.
  • Expands marketing strategies to reach the diverse student population.
  • Provides direct support to the department’s peer education mental health programming.
  • Collaborates with campus partners, Center staff, and others to utilize social media to further outreach capabilities.
  • Other duties as assigned by Center Director.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Education: Master’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, or Psychology.
  • Experience: One (1) year of experience in counseling or a related field.
  • Knowledge / Skills:. Knowledge of the mental health needs of a university population. Knowledge of marketing strategies, social media platforms, and website functionality. Excellent organizational and administrative abilities. Strong work ethic and sense of collegiality. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Excellent intrapersonal skills.
  • Ability to: Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others. Ability to present information clearly and concisely.
  • Licensing/Professional Certifications: Licensed as a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) or licensed masters social worker (LMSW), or licensed professional counselor (LPC or LPC-Associate) in the State of Texas or able to obtain licensure in Texas within first six months of employment.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to lift and carry up to 40lbs. Ability to stand for extended periods of time for outreach events.
  • Other Requirements: Work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends.

PREFERRED EDUCATION / SKILLS/ EXPERIENCE:

Doctorate in counseling, psychology, or social work.

Three or more years’ experience in counseling or related field.

Licensed as a LPC- Supervisor in Texas.

Experience in a college counseling center setting or other relevant university setting.

Bi-lingual (preferably Spanish speaking).

Recent training or certification in advanced trauma-informed care.

Reside within 45 minutes of Texas A&M University-Commerce campus.

SUPERVISION OF OTHERS:

Student workers, graduate assistants, interns, and practicum students.
