Job Summary:
Eastern Washington University is seeking a self-motivated, independent, worker for a Maintenance Custodian - Floating Schedule. This position performs custodial duties and routine maintenance work on building, facilities and equipment. This position performs work of a Custodian 1 & 2 when needed.

Required Qualifications:

  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Minimum age of 18
  • Physical ability to do the job
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Must have the ability to learn institutional custodial technique and requirements.
  • Must have excellent customer service skills.
  • Must be a team-oriented worker with flexibility to assist fellow coworkers throughout campus.
  • Must be able to work any shifts and any days.
  • Must be able to read, write and understand written documents.
  • Candidate must demonstrate interest, ability and/or experience promoting cultural competency, universal accessibility and/or diversity.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of maintenance and operation of various custodial equipment.
  • Prior professional housekeeping or custodial experience.
  • Institutional or industrial custodial experience
  • Able to work overtime/extended hours on occasion.

Responsibility / Duty:
Basic Function: Perform custodial duties and routine maintenance work on buildings, facilities and equipment.
PRIMARY DUTIES FOR THIS POSITION INCLUDE:
Equipment Maintenance: Maintain and repair a variety of heavy duty floor machines such as auto scrubbers, buffers and vacuums; replace drive wheels, shafts, bearings, gears, valves and electrical switches. Oil motors and clean all terminals, maintain all equipment in the area. Organize resources to do repairs in the field whenever possible. Maintain an appropriate stock of parts in the shop to perform necessary repairs and services. Use and maintain assigned power equipment and hand tools, buffers, auto scrubbers, extractors, high pressure washer, high speed buffers and vacuum, broom, mop, squeegee for the cleaning and general maintenance of floors, carpets, furniture, etc.

Preventative Maintenance: Perform preventative maintenance tasks on all assigned custodial equipment on a regularly scheduled basis.

Carpet/Furniture cleaning: Clean carpets/ furniture using special techniques and care learned during certification.

Dispenser Repairs/Installs: Repair and install toilet tissue, paper towel, liquid and powdered soap and feminine hygiene dispensers.

Staff Relations: Work with supervisors and staff to create a sense of ownership and responsibility for their equipment. This will be accomplished through formal training, open and ongoing dialogue on such topics as operations, light maintenance and general care of equipment.

Safety: Attend safety meetings and other related meetings.

Building Security: Lock and unlock buildings: secure building when facilities are not in use by checking for unlocked doors and window; report any unauthorized occupants; turn out lights.

Documentation & Tracking: Assist in maintaining inventory of custodial equipment and parts as well as updating Aim to show the status of work orders.

Windows: Wash windows inside and out as assigned by supervisor.

Custodial: In addition to items listed above the employee will be expected to do all levels of Custodial work proficiently.

Conditions of Employment:
  • Successful candidate must be able to lift up to 25 pounds on frequent basis and carry up to 75 pounds on an occasional basis. Successful candidate must be able to pass a pre-placement physical.
  • This position, during the course of university employment will be involved in the receipt of, or accountability for, university funds or other items of value; as well as the unsupervised access with the developmentally disabled, vulnerable adults or children under the age of 16. The offer of employment is contingent upon successful completion and passing of a background check prior to beginning employment.
  • This position is covered by the Washington Federation of State Employees’ Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Salary Information: $35,064 - $45,300
