The Department of Residence Life and Housing is looking for a qualified Residence Hall Director (RHD) in a temporary capacity for up to 10 months. The temporary Residence Hall Director role is a full-time, live-in optional staff position that reports directly to the Director of Residence Life and Housing/Deputy Title IX Coordinator. The position is 40 hours per week with some weekend and evening commitments. The Residence Hall Director is responsible for the administration and operation of the residence hall. The RHD is expected to enhance the living environment of the residence hall through staff and student development, resident outreach, community building, attention to facilities, and administrative organization.

Essential Duties :

Staff Supervision and Development:

  • Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate up to 9 Resident Assistants (RA) and additional front desk staff.
  • Guide RAs in the implementation of the departmental community building model and resident outreach at the hall level.
  • Attend and assist in facilitating departmental RA training. Plan and implement in-hall staff training sessions.
  • Work with staff members individually to encourage growth and development.
  • Organize and facilitate staff development activities to promote a strong sense of team and support, and to respond to staff concerns.
  • Develop skills of RAs in peer helping and referral techniques.
  • Provide staff members with ongoing positive and constructive feedback. Handle individual staff concerns as they arise.
  • Facilitate weekly staff meeting(s).
  • Work collaboratively with the Facilities and Maintenance Operations Manager.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Student and Community Development:

  • Develop, coordinate, and implement all activities related to educational and social programming according to the programming model.
  • Provide programmatic and administrative support to residential Learning Communities (LCs) located in the hall.
  • Interact with students from a wide variety of age groups and social backgrounds, providing them with personal and administrative support necessary in developing an inclusive community environment.
  • Possess a strong understanding and commitment to the development of students.
  • Advise the elected hall council officers and student staff to coordinate an effective hall organization. Attend hall council meetings.
  • Become acquainted with students living in the hall and provide personal and administrative support necessary in developing an inclusive community environment.
  • Work with students to develop and maintain an atmosphere conducive to study and community living, and encourage students to take responsibility for developing a community atmosphere.
  • Counsel, advise, and provide appropriate referrals for residents in need of professional services.
  • Handle emergency or crisis situations appropriately as they arise.
  • Apply conflict resolution skills and counseling techniques when responding to student crisis situations.
  • Be familiar with and enforce the rules and regulations of the College and the Office of Residence Life and Housing.
  • Direct hall-level student conduct efforts and serve as a College judicial hearing officer for the Office of Residence Life and Housing.
  • Address inappropriate behavior of students and, in following due process, determine fair and appropriate sanctions.
  • Make conduct and counseling referrals as appropriate.
  • Initiate change, and develop and implement new ideas and concepts to improve the quality of life within the residence hall

Organizational Management and Administration:

  • Communicate regularly with the Associate Director of Residence Life and Housing/Deputy Title IX Coordinator, providing accurate and detailed information, and keep supervisor informed of events in the hall on a timely basis.
  • Effectively use the housing information system (StarRez) to serve the students and hall staff.
  • Maintain office hours as determined by Associate Director of Residence Life and Housing/Deputy Title IX Coordinator.
  • Open and close the residence hall at the beginning and end of each semester. Submit summary closing report at the end of each academic year.
  • Facilitate residence hall operations including student room assignments, in-hall transfers, weekly hall occupancy reports and assistance with annual reapplication process.
  • Provide, coordinate and supervise desk coverage. Monitor and/or administer student employee scheduling and payroll preparation.
  • Review and authorize expenditures to keep the residence hall in operating order, ensuring that budgetary guidelines are followed. Budgets include staff development, community building, hall council, office supply/duplicating, and payroll.
  • Report, track and follow up on facilities issues in the hall. Advocate for facilities improvements to enhance student development and academic success within a residential setting.
  • Tour and inspect facilities to ensure building security and safety; recommend modifications in policy and procedure to upgrade safety and security of facilities.
  • Facilitate monitoring of security system (Blackboard).
  • Provide and share on-call coverage, including weekend and holiday coverage.
  • Effectively use oral and written communications skills and have the ability to communicate effectively with individuals from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds.
  • Utilizes effective administrative practices and organizational skills.
  • Understand student development theory and practice.
  • Ability to work independently and meet multiple task deadlines.
  • Understand the importance and commits to a multicultural/diverse campus community

Summer Responsibilities:

  • The RHD serves as the summer RHD and the Conference Manager roles.
  • The Summer RHD role is similar to the RHD role during the academic year.
  • The Conference Manager role includes the following responsibilities:
  • Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate conference staff including Conference Assistants and Front Desk Assistants.
  • Attend weekly meetings with all conference staff.
  • Manage conference group registration, check-in and check-out procedures, room assignments and inventories, and bill reconciliation.
  • Complete post conference evaluations, rosters, damage reports, and information reports.
  • Conduct weekly walk through of the building and follow up on maintenance/custodial concerns.
  • Serve as an information resource to conferees about the campus and Golden Isles community.
  • Maintain a high standard of customer service.
  • This position has been designated by the institution as a position of trust.
  • May be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing

Minimum Qualifications and Training:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in psychology, education, counseling, or closely related field.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and satisfactorily pass a motor vehicle history report and criminal background check

Preferred Qualifications and Training:

  • Two years of student affairs or higher education experience are preferred.
  • Effectively use oral and written communications skills and have the ability to communicate effectively with individuals from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds.
  • Understands the importance and commits to a multicultural/diverse campus community.
  • Understands and implements student development theory and practice.
  • Possess a strong understanding and commitment to the development of students
