Basic Function/Overview::

THIS IS A TEMPORARY, HOURLY AS NEEDED POSITION WITHOUT PERMANENT STATUS

Desired Start Date: March 15, 2021
Working Hours: Between 10 – 21 hours/week to be mutually agreed upon

This is a CONTINUOUS recruitment for an applicant POOL to fill temporary, hourly assignments on an as-needed basis. Departments or divisions will refer to the POOL of applications on file to fill temporary assignments as the need arises. You will be contacted by Human Resources should there be an assignment.

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, assist with communication between hearing-impaired staff or faculty and others by providing educationally appropriate captioning and printed notes of meetings, conferences and discussions as
assigned.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

•Provide instantaneous transcription during a meeting, conference or as needed.

•Provide summarized notes in printed or electronic form to faculty or staff.

•Condense and summarize content in a meaning-for-meaning style.

•Vary content of printed or electronic notes to reflect the needs of the individual faculty or faculty.

•Prepare for conferences or meetings by reviewing materials and adding relevant subject matter vocabulary to the captionist dictionary.

•Provide for general maintenance of captioning computer equipment and peripherals.

Other duties for the Interpreter may include interpreting for Faculty or Staff meetings, in-service programs, and advising other real-time captionist on technical issues or providing interpretation services for employee accommodations.

Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
•Knowledge of various meeting subject areas; captioning computer equipment and related software programs; English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary. Ability to capture relevant
information during fast paced discussions with constant interruptions; operate specialized equipment, including computer hardware and software; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; demonstrate interpersonal skills using tact, diplomacy, and courtesy; understand and follow oral and written directions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Sufficient training and experience to satisfactorily perform assigned duties.

Required Qualifications:

•Generally, a wide acquaintance with academic higher education through attendance at or graduation from a four-year college or university may be essential to provide real time captioning services at a level required for the position assignments.

•In addition, two years of relevant documented real-time captioning experience in a variety of settings usually are needed to perform at the level required for position assignments.

•Two (2) years of experience in providing real-time captioning services is preferable.

Preferred Qualifications:

•Two (2) to four (4) years of interpreting in higher education

• Graduation from a four-year college or university

License(s) & Other Requirements:

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Employees may periodically be required to operate a vehicle that necessitates possession of a valid California driver’s license. Such employees must have the ability to secure and maintain a valid California driver’s license.
