Academic Program Coordinator: Berkeley Interdisciplinary Migration Initiative-IGS

The Berkeley Interdisciplinary Migration Initiative (BIMI) at the University of California, Berkeley is seeking applications for an Academic Program Coordinator. The expected start date of this full-time, 2-year position is April 1, 2021. The position may be renewed for an additional year.

Program Overview:
This Academic Coordinator I position will be located within the Institute for Governmental Studies and will be the nexus for the coordination, oversight and implementation of programs and research relating to the Berkeley Interdisciplinary Migration Initiative (BIMI). BIMI is a campus initiative to advance research, training and public outreach on human mobility, immigrants' integration and the ways migration transforms societies around the world. Job Duties & Key Responsibilities:
The holder of this position will be responsible for the implementation of strategic and operational aspects of BIMI, which include:
  • Managing multiple and frequently competing program needs.
  • Planning and directing training initiatives, including the existing annual summer training institute in migration research, with the BIMI faculty director and other partners
  • Performing analysis and/or supervising the analysis done by research assistants using a wide variety of migration data and information that are complex in nature
    • Drafting, editing, and/or supervising the writing of research reports and policy briefings

  • Synthesizing academic research and writing grant proposals, concept documents, etc.

  • Identifying opportunities for private fundraising and external government or foundation grants
    • Working with faculty and other partners to develop new programs and initiatives and participating in all strategic development aspects of BIMI
    • Managing BIMI communications (e-newsletter, social media, email account, website, etc.).

  • Engaging with campus administrative and academic departments and organized research units to effectively implement, manage, and communicate BIMI's goals and programs.

  • Organizing and coordinating interdisciplinary scientific meetings and workshops related to migration across campus and with partner organizations

  • Overseeing all management and financial activities of BIMI in partnership with other campus units, including but not limited to tracking program expenditures, processing reimbursements, submitting required external and internal funding reports, hiring and supervising student workers, and otherwise managing BIMI administrative needs

    Minimum Basic Qualifications (by time of application):
  • Masters degree (or equivalent international degree) or enrolled in a master's degree program (or equivalent international degree program) at the time of application.

    Additional Required Qualifications (by start date):
  • Masters degree or equivalent international degree by the start of employment.

    Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated organizational management, with the ability to manage disparate groups of faculty, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget.
  • Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with faculty, staff and students, verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage an academic, industry or non-profit program.
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task within demanding time-frames, working both independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience identifying, organizing and using data relevant to migration analysis
