Overview

Princeton University is seeking a Study Abroad Advisor who will join the Study Abroad Program, part of the larger Office of International Programs. Located about 50 miles from New York City and 50 miles from Philadelphia, Princeton University is a highly selective private liberal arts university with an undergraduate enrollment of approx. 5,200.

The Study Abroad Office offers a wide variety of intellectually challenging, culturally enriching and socially diverse academic programs abroad. At Princeton, approximately 200 students study abroad for a semester or year. The Study Abroad Office also manages approximately ten Exchange Programs with leading universities worldwide. The Office provides support and assistance to other departments offering short-term international programs and also advises students for summer study abroad.

This full-time, twelve-month position takes place in a high-volume, fast-paced work environment. The rest of the Study Abroad team is composed of the Director, Assistant Director, one additional Study Abroad Advisor and a Study Abroad Coordinator.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct individual and group advising for students on academic and personal goals, program selection, health and safety issues, inter-cultural competency, diversity/inclusion, etc.
  • Lead large-group information or pre-departure sessions for students; assist with pre-departure sessions and materials for faculty-led programs and with information sessions for prospective students and parents
  • Develop expertise and understanding of the University's curriculum, degree requirements, and academic policies to ensure accurate and proactive advising for students
  • Develop knowledge and expertise for an assigned regional portfolio of programs, for which the advisor will be the primary resource; develop expertise and understanding of foreign credit systems and utilize that knowledge for the preliminary review of students' study plans/general elective credit within the advisor's portfolio
  • Assist with visa advising as needed; stay current with evolving immigration issues, policies, and regulations
  • Administer online nomination/application/approval processes for programs, monitoring compliance with requirements and policies and maintaining accurate and up-to-date student records (through the use of Terra Dotta software).
  • Maintain, collect, and update program data and information in the Terra Dotta system and pull reports and queries as needed
  • Assist with management/administration and marketing of Princeton-led programs as needed
  • Assist with the collection and analysis of study abroad data and program evaluations; utilizes the feedback to improve program management/evaluation and student learning outcomes
  • Work cooperatively with faculty and other administrative offices/units on campus
  • Develop (or co-develop) and manage (or co-manage) an effective Global Ambassadors program for returnees and assist the Study Abroad team with re-entry programming; contributes innovative ideas and expertise to build community and enhance student-life related initiatives to promote study abroad
  • Liaise with appropriate colleagues inside and outside the University (on-campus offices, partner schools, security and insurance agencies, etc.) to remain abreast of health/safety best practices and to handle case and crisis management in the event of study abroad emergencies; rotating on-call duties with the rest of the Study Abroad team as needed
  • Working in close contact with the Office of International Programs' Communications Manager, organize promotional and recruitment strategies (especially for less popular or newer programs) by leveraging traditional communication channels as well as new social media and less traditional marketing venues
  • Maintain, or develop, content for handbooks, newsletters, website, and other informational literature for students, faculty, parents, and other offices, following best practices for study abroad
Qualifications

We seek an experienced, capable person with knowledge of important principles and issues in study abroad advising, intercultural competency, and engaged learning. The selected candidate should have the ability/willingness to work some evenings and week-ends as needed.

Essential:

  • Bachelor's degree in a liberal arts degree, international education or a related field (Master's degree in international education, higher education, or public administration or a related field strongly preferred)
  • At least 2-3 years previous relevant experience in higher education, advising/mentoring undergraduate students, with a special focus on academic advising in a high-caliber liberal arts environment (including STEM students), and in student programming
  • Understanding of student development, outcome assessment
  • Excellent communications skills, both oral and written. Ability to effectively communicate in a variety of situations, including interpersonal and formal large-group settings. Ability to distill and convey information to multiple audiences (students, parents, faculty, staff) and to work in a diverse environment
  • Outstanding organization skills and superb attention to detail. Ability to work under pressure and to multi-task in a fast-paced environment, especially during peak times of the year. Keen problem-solving skills

Preferred:

  • Demonstrated familiarity with international higher education systems and different program models for study abroad
    Previous site visit experience and familiarity with the major third-party study abroad providers and direct-enroll programs the university is affiliated with
  • Familiarity with passport/visa advising and visa application processes for both domestic and international students; experience with US Department of State resources and requirements for travelers
  • Familiarity with major professional organizations in the field of international education, basic understanding of the Forum on Education Abroad's Code of Ethics and Principles of Good Practice
  • Excellent technology skills: previous extensive experience with Terra Dotta data management software and proficiency with People Soft. Solid understanding of web design and video editing; proficiency with standard office software (word processing, database, presentation, spreadsheet, desktop publishing). Proficiency with social media
  • Some experience living, studying or working abroad, and competency in at least one foreign language highly preferred
