The Office of Development (OOD) advances Stanford's mission by raising philanthropic support from alumni, parents, families, friends, and institutional funders. Working in concert with volunteers and academic leaders, OOD staff members strive to accelerate Stanford's purposeful impact in the world.

The Executive Communications team within the Office of Development is seeking a professional writer and editor to craft gift acknowledgements and other correspondence for Stanford's most generous donors.

The Development Writer will create a high volume of customized letters and emails on behalf of four senior university leaders: the president, chair of the Board of Trustees, the vice president for development, and dean for the School of Humanities & Sciences. This includes gift acknowledgements as well as correspondence for special circumstances, such as notes of condolence and congratulations, birthday greetings, cover letters or emails, and follow-up messages to events and donor meeting. In addition, the Development Writer will edit invitations to donor events and create and manage the production of professorship booklets.

This position reports to the Senior Associate Director, Executive Communications, and works alongside a fellow Development Writer and a Communications Associate. The Executive Communications team is part of a larger Communications, Digital & Donor Relations team within the central Office of Development.

Your responsibilities will include*:

  • Crafting specialized messages that are aligned with the mission, values, and fundraising priorities for the university
  • Honing expertise around the voice, style, and vocabulary of four different senior leaders
  • Conducting research to maintain an in-depth knowledge of Stanford's donors, including their interests, history, and relationship with the university and its leaders
  • Collaborating closely with and seeking editorial input and review from development officers and OOD leadership
  • Responding nimbly to special requests from internal partners
  • Staying informed about matters specific to Stanford, including fundraising priorities, as well as issues of current relevance to higher education
  • Attending campus events where the senior leaders are speaking (or watching recordings) and reading other materials to ensure alignment of messaging
  • Providing expertise on matters of editorial style, grammar, etiquette, and protocol
  • Maintaining high production at top quality
  • Utilizing a centralized database system to conduct research, create documents, and maintain archives
  • A commitment to promoting and supporting an environment of diversity and inclusion

To be successful in this position, you will bring:
  • Bachelor's degree and five years of work experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, with proven ability to write, edit, and organize thoughts in a clear, concise, and well-organized manner
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact effectively with a diverse array of people, including senior leaders
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple deadlines
  • Demonstrated sound judgment in handling confidential and sensitive materials
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Knowledge of database systems; proficiency with Salesforce proficiency is helpful
  • Demonstrated experience engaging and motivating groups of diverse individuals.


Physical Requirements
  • Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, sit, and use a telephone, stand/walk.
  • Occasionally light/fine grasping, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds, writing by hand.
