Assistant Teaching Professor

Civil & Environmental Engineering Department

Worcester Polytechnic Institute - WPI

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute invites applications for a teaching faculty position in the area of construction and project management (CPM). The appointment will be at the Teaching Professor (all rank) or Professor of Practice Level (commensurate with candidate background) and will start in August 2021.

This area of teaching contributes to the undergraduate degree programs (Civil, Environmental, and Architectural Engineering) as well as to a Master’s program in CPM. WPI’s signature undergraduate education emphasizes project-based learning, and the successful candidate will advise and co-advise projects in addition to teaching. Candidates must have an earned Ph.D. in Civil Engineering or related field, or must have extensive industry experience at the forefront of CPM practice. Professional licensure and certifications are preferred.

The successful candidate will be expected to be an excellent instructor, able to effectively teach both undergraduate and graduate courses in the CPM emphasis area; prior teaching experience is valued. Candidates whose teaching interests extend to collaboration with the growing Architectural Engineering program are of interest. The successful candidate will also be expected to interface with industry and professional organizations to support and provide service to the department, institution, and profession. The successful candidate will work with the department head and other faculty to help evolve the CPM curriculum as needed and to evaluate adjunct faculty for the program. There is preference for candidates with interests or experience that connect students to the importance of CPM in the growing areas of new materials, changing construction processes (automation and prefabrication, digital fabrication, robotics), new technologies, parametric design tools, building information modeling, and sustainable and “green” construction.

WPI’s reputation as a rigorous and innovative university rests on the shoulders of its faculty. A highly selective, private technological university and one of the nation’s first, WPI believes that when great minds work together, great advances follow. Our department and institute are committed to creating an inclusive workplace where everyone feels valued and respected; a place where every student, faculty and staff member can be themselves, irrespective of their race, class, gender, or sexual orientation, so that they can study, live, and work comfortably, to reach their full potential, and make meaningful contributions in order to meet departmental and institutional goals. Analogous to the tenure track, WPI offers non-tenure-track faculty opportunities for promotion to the rank of Associate and Full Teaching Professor.

Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, a teaching statement, a statement regarding contributions to diversity, and names and email addresses for at least five references. Please direct queries to the chair of the search committee, Carrick Eggleston ( It is very important that candidates be able to clearly show how they will support WPI’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.
