About This Position

The John P. Hussman Institute for Human Genomics (HIHG) at the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine, has an exciting career opportunity for a Research Associate 2. The Research Associate 2 contributes to the University’s research activities under the supervision of senior staff. Moreover, the incumbent understands, interprets, and complies with research policies and protocols.

The duties and responsibilities for this position may include, but are not limited to:

  • Performs, analyze, and interpret DNA sequencing experiments

  • Designs experiments for characterizing DNA variants

  • Identifies and order supplies and reagents for experiments

  • Keeps logs of laboratory inventories

  • Updates and maintains laboratory databases for DNA variants

  • Trains and supervises new laboratory personnel

  • Perform highly specialized sequence capture sample preparation protocols, as well as RNA sample reparations to run the Illumina Novaseq, NextSeq and MiSeq sequencing platform.

  • Operate various lab equipment including but not limited to centrifuges, liquid handling robots (specifically the Perkin Elmer Sciclone G3), PCR blocks, Illumina Novaseq, NextSeq and MiSeq, and Covaris Adaptive Focused Acoustic Disruptor.

  • Perform quantitation and qualitation of DNA/RNA using Nanodrop, Qubit, gel electrophoresis, qPCR, Agilent 2100 Bioanalyzer, Agilent TapeStation and Caliper LabChip GX.

  • Analyze data for quality and consistency, troubleshoot equipment and protocols, prepare reports on progress/trends and make appropriate recommendations or conclusions to supervisor.

  • Schedule meetings with company technical support and engineers to resolve experimental and hardware issues.

  • Demonstrate an ability to learn new technologies and standard operating protocols in a timely manner.

  • Track project progress, provide status updates, and provide the information necessary to ensure that a given project moves through the CGT pipeline.

  • Review laboratory methods manual, scientific journals, abstracts and other literature for information applicable to research experiments.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in a basic or health science with at least two years of relevant experience. Skill in collecting, organizing, and analyzing data. Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems. Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.
