Advertised Job Summary:

The School of Medicine Greenville at the University of South Carolina (UofSC) seeks a highly motivated and energetic communications professional to serve as Director of Communications. Working at the direction of the Dean and reporting to the Executive Director of Finance and Business Operations, the Director of Communications will be tasked with enhancing the profile and reputation of the school nationally within a top-tier public research university.

The Director will work closely with the Associate Director of Integrated Communications within UofSC’s Office of Communications & Public Affairs to execute a focused and strategic communications plan that will advance the school’s reputation and help engage the highest quality faculty, donors, alumni, students and prospective students. In addition, the Director will work with the Prisma Health-Upstate Marketing and Communications team to align messaging and collaborate on communications objectives related to its role as key academic and clinical partner to the School of Medicine Greenville.

Using UofSC communications guidelines and the brand toolbox, the Director will create content that builds awareness of, drives engagement with and enhances the reputation of the school by relying on their expertise in written and visual communication in print, on the web, through social media and by attaining coverage in earned media.

Minimum Qualifications (Classified and Unclassified positions):

Master’s degree and 3 years professional experience related to the development and dissemination of informational material, or Bachelor’s degree and 5 years related experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree and eight years of professional experience working in a client-facing health care or technology-related setting. Experience with public-private partnerships is a plus. Writing for broad audiences as well as those in higher education, the health sciences or other STEM disciplines are highly preferred.


The Director of Communications is an organized, enterprising self-starter with executive presence and a proven ability to think strategically to create engaging content across all media. A track record of successfully pitching stories to national media is preferred. Demonstrated proficiency in content management software, social media platforms, web analytics and social media monitoring and be adaptable to new technology. Knowledge of AP style is required, along with the ability to be a self-editor.

Project management skills and a proven ability to meet tight deadlines are a must. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are a necessity for success in this role along with an ability to work as part of a wider university communications team. A desire to develop professionally and keep abreast of developing trends in communications is required.
