About the Department:NC State University invites applications and nominations for the position of Research Solutions Consultant. This position is part of a new university initiative led by the NC State University Libraries, the Office of Information Technology (OIT), and the Office of Research and Innovation (ORI) to develop a robust Research Computing & Data Facilitation Service (RCDFS) serving NC State’s research enterprise. The technological infrastructure needed to conduct successful, efficient, secure, and productive research is becoming increasingly complex. The Research Solutions Consultant will strive to reduce the burden placed on researchers and departmental support staff by serving as a resource to analyze requirements, make recommendations for appropriate technologies, and propose design solutions that meet individual project needs.
In close consultation with service providers, the Research Solutions Consultant will aim to provide cost-effective solutions leveraging existing university infrastructure and services, as well as services and technologies not currently offered by a university service provider, such as external cloud computing platforms.
Two Research Solutions Consultants will be hired from this search. One will be placed in the Shared Services Unit within the Office of Information Technology, and another will be placed in the Digital Library Initiatives Department within the NC State University Libraries. Both will work collaboratively with staff across the university to form the core of the Research Computing & Data Facilitation Service.
Essential Job Duties:Integrates technical capabilities and solutions across a broad spectrum of information technology disciplines in order to address the needs of an assigned client base: collaborates with engineers or developers to identify system data, hardware, or software components; develops system engineering, software engineering, system integration, or distributed system architectures; ensures compatibility of system components; performs security analyses; develops project plans, schedules, or budgets. Note: This classification is not intended for individuals whose majority of work effort can be captured by one of the other more specialized EHRA IT professional classifications, nor is it intended for individuals whose role is primarily to provide routine technical or help desk support or manage information technology projects.
Minimum Education and Experience:- Master’s degree and at least two years’ of relevant experience; or Bachelor’s degree with at least three years’ of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and relevant experience.
- Minimum of 4 years’ experience working in IT, to include 2 years of experience supporting research computing
- Bachelor’s degree in relevant discipline; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Proven ability to understand practices in various research communities
- Demonstrated team performance skills and a service-mindset approach
- Demonstrated ability to implement robust and secure IT solutions within a fast-paced research environment
- Evidence of ability for ongoing professional development and contribution.
- Significant experience supporting research computing infrastructure and/or applications
- Broad knowledge of and experience with the deployment and management of cyberinfrastructure systems (e.g., cloud computing, storage, cluster computing, network, database, virtualized systems)
- Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills, including demonstrated ability to interact credibly with researchers, IT staff, IT leadership, and university administrators
- Demonstrated knowledge of the research process, proposal lifecycle, data lifecycle, and data workflows
- Demonstrated awareness of security protocols and regulations affecting research data
- Commitment to fostering an environment of equity, diversity, and inclusion
