Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:

The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Department of Biology teaches biological concepts and research methods to biology and medical technology majors and prepares them for professional careers and/or advanced study. We also introduce non-biology majors to basic biological knowledge and its applications to our society. We prepare graduate students for professional careers and/or further graduate study. By involving undergraduate and graduate students in research, we increase society’s knowledge of living organisms and their environments and we enhance our students’ technical and analytical skills so that they can contribute meaningfully to an increasingly technological society. We apply our skills by serving the University, our profession, and the larger community.

Position Summary:

The Post-Doctoral Fellow will work on a Department of Defense-funded project that aims to improve hypoxia tolerance of brain function. This work takes advantage of an amphibian model that can shift neural function between states of low and very high tolerance to metabolic stress. Technical approaches employed will include patch clamp electrophysiology, single-cell RNA sequencing, quantitative PCR, and circuit-level electrophysiological analysis. Thus, a strong background in cell and systems-level physiology is desired.

Minimum Qualifications:

Ph.D. in Physiology, Neuroscience, Cell Biology, or related fields.

Preferred Qualifications:

Background in comparative physiology and experimental approaches in physiology.

Conduct physiology experiments that include patch clamp electrophysiology and network level recordings to understand metabolic changes that improve neural function during energy stress. The Scholar will also contribute to project design, data analysis, and statistical analysis.
