Organizational Unit Overview:

The Department of Surgery is a clinical department within the School of Medicine with the attendant responsibility for medical education and research. The Chair of the department is also the Chief of Surgical Services for the hospital. The department includes 36 full-time faculty members in the sections of: transplant surgery, plastic surgery, pediatric surgery, surgical oncology, general and bariatric surgery, and trauma and acute care surgery. It also includes clinical and basic science research labs. The 70+ employees in the department support our clinical, education, and research programs.
The Department of Surgery at East Carolina University is dedicated to providing state-of-the-art care to patients in eastern North Carolina. The ECU Brody School of Medicine is affiliated with Vidant Medical Center (VMC).

Job Duties :

A Nursing Assistant is needed for a busy outpatient surgical clinic. The employee will measure and report blood pressures and temperatures of patients and record them in patient’s Electronic Health Record, place patients in designated exam rooms along with their records and maintain optimal patient flow, and report any unusual or questionable findings or patient behaviors to nurse, CMA or physician, i.e. elevated blood pressure, agitation, etc. They will serve as chaperones for physicians when needed, keep the medical supply room stocked with necessary equipment as designated by RN, clean medical instruments used by physicians during patient procedures, check each exam room to ensure cleanliness, and make sure appropriate supplies/medical equipment are readily available to physicians. The employee will also inspect cabinets in each exam/procedure room to keep an accurate account of linens and provide assistance with gowns and sheets to patients before and after exams. Direct nursing care includes assisting providers during procedures and examinations and performing nursing skills.

CLINICAL SUPPORT POSITION – NOT SUBJECT TO STATE HUMAN RESOURCES ACT.

Minimum Education/Experience:

Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Require registration as a Nurse Aide by the North Carolina Board of Nursing, or certification through the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA.)

License or Certification required by statute or regulation:

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:

Medical office clinical experience, including knowledge of vital sign measurement, sterile techniques, and infection control protocol.

Ability to communicate with patients and patients’ families, as well as other health care professionals.

Ability to work independently, prioritize and handle multiple tasks, and complete tasks effectively and in a timely manner.

License or Certification required by the Department:
