A Ph.D. in Communication, Organizational Communication or related field and graduate-level courses in Communication Leadership are required. The ideal candidate will contribute to continued growth of the Master of Arts in Communication program, to the Edwards College’s Charles Joyner Institute for Gullah and African Diaspora Studies, and by teaching courses in their own areas of expertise. The ability to teach courses in the department’s five undergraduate concentrations, including on data analytics, supervisee development, or nonprofit work from communication perspectives, is also encouraged.

Faculty are expected to provide high-quality instruction, conduct research and publish/perform in appropriate professional venues, mentor students, provide professional service to the University, and demonstrate a commitment to diversity, student learning, and inclusive pedagogy. Ideal candidates should also be able to teach courses using a variety of instructional methods, including face-to-face, hybrid, and online. Teaching assignments may include evening/weekend courses.

The Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts at Coastal Carolina University seeks to recruit and retain a diverse community of scholars whose scholarship, teaching, and community engagement focus on the culture, history, and artistic expression of the African Diaspora Community in the United States. We seek teacher-scholars who will serve as mentors for our diverse student body and who have a demonstrated commitment to underrepresented and underserved communities as well as the academic success of all our students. Priority for this position will be given to applicants who can contribute teaching, curriculum development, and research in the areas of African American studies, leadership, and advocacy.

While the academic home for the candidates will be in the Department of Communication, Media and Culture, we are especially interested in hiring new faculty members who pursue their own scholarship within the interdisciplinary framework of African Diaspora Studies. We seek candidates who can be appointed as Affiliate Faculty in our Joyner Institute for Gullah and African Diaspora Studies and who will contribute to the growth of such programs as the existing Minor in African and African Diaspora Studies and to future academic programs in Africana Studies, African American fine and performing arts, advocacy, and leadership.

The Department of Communication, Media and Culture is one of Coastal Carolina University’s largest departments, serving approximately 450 majors across five concentrations, 100 minors in communication and in journalism, and 30 students in its Master of Arts program. Students contribute to a radio station, television studio, film society and short film festival, student-run public relations firm, and media in the University’s athletics programs and local community.
