Position SummaryLocated 45 minutes from the Nation’s Capital, nestled in a history rich community of southern Maryland, The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) is a two times Aspen Award winning institution (top 15% of Community Colleges) with academic programs in over 100 degree programs. Our faculty work closely with students inside and outside of the classroom to help them maximize their success, serving as formal and informal advisors. Psychology faculty are involved professional development activities, regularly attending and presenting at national and regional conferences and workshops.

Our faculty teach a range of face-to-face, online, hybrid and/or blended and hy-flex classes using a variety of materials, including Open Educational Resources (OERs). Using both synchronous and asynchronous modes of instructional delivery, our faculty focus on student engagement and success through critical thinking, employing analytical and hands-on approaches. CSM faculty are expected to be knowledgeable about learning management systems in addition to face-to-face and innovative technology-based instructional delivery approaches. As such, we are seeking an innovative educator to join our psychology faculty. Psychology faculty teach General Psychology, as well Personality and Adjustment, Introduction to Abnormal Psychology, and Lifespan Development, and the successful candidate will have a strong background in a range of courses. CSM is especially interested in candidates able to serve as the primary instructor for Statistics for the Behavioral and Science and Personality and Adjustment.

Specific Duties and ResponsibilitiesPsychology faculty teach a wide range of freshman- and sophomore-level undergraduate classes. The successful faculty member will teach 15 credit hours per semester and 30 credit hours per academic year of day, evening, or weekend classes. Flexibility is required to work in this position as teaching assignments may vary from semester to semester. There may also be opportunities to teach classes in the summer. The faculty member hired in this position is responsible for the coordination, planning, preparation, presentation, and evaluation of classroom instruction and related activities to promote student-centered learning and success. At a minimum, the related activities include instruction, holding office hours, serving on various committees, and demonstrating a commitment to professional development through participating in local, state, regional, and national professional activities and organizations.

DUTIES AND STANDARDS INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

Teach 30 credits of courses per contract year in the psychology disciplineTeach a range of courses that may include morning, day, evening, weekend or online, in an accelerated format. Opportunities may exist to teach in summerDesign assignments that incorporate students’ program of study and connect to the psychology discipline Engage students in their learning through active and collaborative learning approachesMeet with students outside of class to assist them with being successful college studentsIncorporate culturally relevant pedagogies into the teaching and learning processDemonstrated ability to communicate orally and in writingDemonstrated ability to read and interpret informationDemonstrated ability to deliver instruction to diverse student populations, with varied levels of learning and preparation Knowledge and use of student engagement strategies that support completion and student success goalsDemonstrated experience providing feedback students can use to improve their performanceMaintain an ongoing program of professional development and participate in professional organizations, workshops, seminars, conferences and activitiesMastery of appropriate computer operation skills


Minimum Education and Training
  • M.A. in Psychology. Required
  • Ph.D. in Psychology. Preferred.
  • At least two years of college-level teaching experience, preferably at the community college level
  • Ability to use word processing, basis internet applications, and basic database navigation
  • Ability to use an education enterprise, learning management system such as D2L, Brightspace to support and facilitate instructional delivery
  • Ability to teach in face-to-face, virtual, web, and web-hybrid formats
