ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The English, Literature, and Creative Writing Department consists of 37 full-time faculty and over 60 part-time faculty. Our department values diversity and equity, and we welcome faculty and students from all races, ethnicities, genders, religions, and sexual orientations. Our faculty work closely with Student Services, the Library, and academic support centers to provide our students with access to a variety of resources.

What were the key factors in creating that success, particularly for African American, Latinx, Asian American/Pacific Islander, Native American, and LGBTQ+ students? Describe how your teaching approach has changed over the years. Provide examples of what motivated the change(s). What aspects of your life as a teacher bring you the most joy?
5. A minimum of three (3) current letters of recommendation that reflect relevant experience. Whenever possible, letters should reference direct observation of the candidate’s teaching and interactions with students. (Do not use social media or professional networks as a means to provide letters of recommendation or any of the required documents)
6.College and/or university transcripts showing the awarded/conferred degree are required and must be submitted with the online application by all applicants, including current or former employees of the college, to demonstrate that the required educational qualifications are met. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable at the time of application; however, copies of diplomas are not accepted in lieu of transcripts.
7.Equivalency Request: Candidates not holding the stated required qualifications who are requesting consideration based on an equivalency, will be asked to answer some supplemental questions to be considered
8. Transcripts issued outside the United States require a course-by-course analysis with an equivalency statement from a certified transcript evaluation service verifying the degree equivalency to that of an accredited institution within the USA. This report must be attached with the application and submitted by the filing deadline.

Health & Welfare:

The College contributes $12,159 toward annual premiums for medical, dental, vision, and life insurance coverage. Lifetime retirement benefits provided for eligible retirees.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

1.Teach all composition levels; teach literature and creative writing courses as available; teach assigned courses in accordance with course outline of record
2.Participate in curriculum development, student and program learning outcome development and assessment, grants relevant to program
3.Serve on College committees as necessary to maintain and improve the instructional program, and participate in appropriate professional development activities
4.Perform related duties as assigned, including timely compliance with administrative responsibilities and College, division, and department policies
5.Collaborate effectively with other faculty, staff, and administrators to plan, develop, and execute programs related to English
6.Instruct and support students with diverse backgrounds utilizing culturally relevant pedagogy, careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methods including those for online instruction, informed critical feedback on assignments and discussions, and student learning outcomes
7.Support a philosophy of instruction focusing on critical thinking and analysis
8.Maintain scheduled office and campus hours and participate in department/division meetings and committees
9.Participate in accreditation, program review, and processes for institutional planning
10.Attend, participate in, and present at professional development events, meetings, and various College committees and advisory groups to provide service to the College and participate in shared governance
11.Teach late afternoon and/or evening assignments if required as part of the regular contract

Required Qualifications:

A.The following awarded/conferred from a regionally accredited institution:
1.Master’s degree in English, literature, comparative literature, or composition; OR
2.Bachelor’s degree in any of the above AND Master’s in linguistics, TESL, speech, education with a specialization in reading, creative writing or journalism; OR
3.California Community College credential, “Valid for Life” (no longer issued), authorizing service as an instructor in the appropriate discipline; refer to Ed Code § 87355 (If meeting qualifications with this credential, a copy of the valid lifetime credential must be submitted with the application.); OR
4. The equivalent (please answer supplemental questions regarding an equivalency request) AND
B.Commitment to the community college goals/objectives of providing quality programs and services for students with diverse abilities and interests; personal qualities to work effectively and sensitively in a multicultural environment; awareness and commitment to the special needs of non-traditional students.

Preferred Qualifications:

1.Successful teaching experience in college composition courses to diverse student populations
2.Graduate coursework in literature, composition, rhetoric, or cultural/ethnic/gender/queer studies
3.Commitment to equity, social justice, and culturally responsive pedagogy
4.Awareness of and sensitivity to the needs of underserved student populations and demonstrated skill in supporting them in college-level courses
5.Familiarity with and commitment to the mission and functions of a community college and experience teaching at the community college level
6.Ability to communicate effectively to students orally and in writing.
7.Ability to translate curriculum meaningfully for students with diverse backgrounds
8.Aptitude in providing strategies to help students succeed in their courses

License(s) & Other Requirements:

The incumbent may periodically be required to travel to a variety of locations. If operating a vehicle, employees must have the ability to secure and maintain a valid California driver’s license.

Conditions of Employment:

This is a full-time, tenure-track 10-month contract position that begins in the 2021-22 academic year. Placement on the salary schedule is based on formal education, full-time and/or part-time teaching, and related work experience, up to a maximum placement at step 9.

Official offers of employment are made by Mt. San Antonio College Human Resources and are made contingent upon Board approval. It is also required that a final offer of employment will only be made after the candidate has successfully been live scanned and clearance for employment is authorized by Human Resources. Costs for live scan services shall be borne by the candidate.

Selection Procedure::

A committee will evaluate applications, taking into account breadth and depth of relevant education, training, experience, skills, knowledge, and abilities.
