The Berkeley Center for Green Chemistry (BCGC) in the College of Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley, seeks applicants for an Academic Coordinator to serve as Executive Director of a multidisciplinary program involving green chemistry research, teaching, and public engagement. The program brings together faculty, researchers, and students in the College of Chemistry, the Rausser College of Natural Resources, the College of Engineering, the School of Public Health, Berkeley School of Law, and the Haas School of Business. This is a part-time (50%) position with an expected start date in fall 2021. Salary commensurate with experience.

The Executive Director of BCGC will be expected to manage, administer, and promote the strategic and operational aspects of the BCGC mission - “ …to bring about a generational transformation toward the design and use of inherently safer chemicals and materials” - under the supervision of the Academic Director and with the advice of a nine-member Board of Directors within the administrative purview of the College of Chemistry. The Executive Director will collaborate with colleagues across several departments and schools within the university and beyond.

The Executive Director will provide leadership and management as well as development and communication for the BCGC. This position will manage the budget, provide program evaluation, support education and research activities to the graduate and undergraduate students working in the center, identify funding opportunities and assist with grant writing and grant reporting, ensure effective systems are in place to track progress in the broad areas of the BCGC's academic work, provide leadership and oversight in organizing seminars and events, organize executive meetings, provide outreach to constituencies and create and oversee web and outreach content. Communication and development duties include refining and deepening all aspects of communication, from web presence to campus and external relations; garnering new opportunities for academic content and financial stability; building partnerships in new areas of inquiry and with other academic institutions; and establishing relationships with funders and key leaders at each stage of growth.

General Administration (30% of part-time position)
Plan and manage a budget through the UC Berkeley administrative system, direct and coordinate with a part-time budget research administrator (RA); hire, supervise employees, administer and report on sponsored grants, and fulfill all necessary administrative protocols required by the university.

Plan, execute, and document fund raising for the center in coordination with the College of Chemistry's development office. This will include identification of funding opportunities, grant writing, and grant reporting as well as the cultivation of new and established opportunities for financial support.

Manage the physical upkeep, staff scheduling, and provisioning of the offices of the center, and manage the maintenance of center archives and documents as well as tracking and documenting progress in academic and outreach activities.

Plan and manage any special contract consultancy projects, including drafting contracts, scopes of work, memoranda of understanding, and schedules and timelines.

Coordinate a nine-member board of associate directors, who will serve in an advisory capacity, by providing written updates every quarter, and meeting at minimum of once per semester, and as necessary for special initiatives with either the full board or designated committees.

Education (30% of part-time position)
Assist with the planning and possible instruction of PH271H Greener Solutions, including the solicitation of students and industry partners, classroom instruction, provision of informational and technical support to the student teams, coordination of industry, non-profit or government partners.

May supervise and mentor undergraduate instructors of Chem98 (DeCal course), including regular meetings, coordination with volunteer speakers and planning of lessons.

Plan and manage the student intern program, Greener Partnerships, including research and outreach planning, coordination with intern hosts, directing and mentoring of research by interns, recruitment and personnel decisions.

Research (15% of part-time position)
Support and promote the current research sponsored by the center, including but not limited to the search for alternatives to poly and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), additive manufacturing and safer consumer goods. Supervise and coordinate researchers. Provide material and informational assistance as necessary. Coordinate dissemination of results.

Engagement (25% of part-time position)
Refine and deepen all aspects of communication, from web presence to campus and external relations; garnering new opportunities for academic content and financial stability; building partnerships in new areas of inquiry and with other academic institutions; and establishing relationships with funders and key leaders at each stage of growth.

Organize seminars and events, executive meetings, outreach to constituencies, website design and management, and design of outreach content. Curate and maintain the BCGC website. Design and produce a regular newsletter.

Basic qualifications (required at time of application):
  • Advanced degree or enrolled in an advanced degree program.

Additional qualifications (required by the start date of the job):
  • Advanced degree.

Preferred qualifications:
  • Advanced degree in a field related to science, engineering, or health.
  • Working knowledge of common campus-specific and other computer application programs, including data bases, social media, and research tools.
  • Demonstrated ability in not for profit fundraising from private and public sector sources.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage an academic, industry or non-profit program.
  • Demonstrated ability in effective oral and written communication and advocacy, preferably in the areas of public health, environmental science, sustainable chemistry or engineering.
