Position Summary:

UCI Student Housing serves roughly 9,000 undergraduate and graduate students in six on-campus housing communities that include residence halls, theme houses, and apartments. Comprehensive Residence Life programs, Dining, and other support services are tailored to the needs of each community. Student Housing is part of the Auxiliary Services arm of UCI Student Affairs, and partners with campus colleagues to support the academic success and well-being of students.

Under the general supervision of the Senior Building Maintenance Supervisor, incumbent has operational responsibility for the maintenance and repair of all buildings within the Middle Earth Housing complex. The incumbent has assigned duties in multiple semi-skilled areas within the building trades to include plumbing, patching, carpentry, preventative maintenance, screen repair, painting, lock repair and other general maintenance projects as assigned. Must demonstrate ability to work independently and as part of a team. Actively participate in the development, review and implementation of the Disaster Preparation, Emergency Response and Business Continuity Plans; including drills and exercises meant to determine best practices. The initial assignment is in Middle Earth but can be changed at any time to meet the business need of the department. May be required to participate in the department’s on-call rotation as stated in the current contract.

Required:

Two or more years’ experience work in building maintenance or related position.

Valid driver’s license.

Perform all other duties as assigned by Supervisor. Ability to troubleshoot and repair all basic interior and exterior plumbing problems within the community. Must have skill to operate a power and hand snake. must have sufficient skills to advise supervisor to refer major repair problems to Facilities Management. Skill to prepare surfaces for painting. Knowledge and ability to properly apply paint materials to multiple surfaces. Must have experience in and a strong working knowledge of the troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of the current electronic lock system. Must possess the skill to dismantle, repair, reassemble, program and test card and hard key locks. Experience to troubleshoot and repair basic electrical problems. Must have working knowledge of inverter systems, breaker systems and time clocks. Must have the skills to replace/repair or install the following: switches, garbage disposals, electrical heating systems and bathroom fans. Must be able to determine and advise supervisor if repair problems need to be referred to Facilities Management. Must possess sufficient written and verbal skills to effectively communicate in English with Supervisor, residents, and staff, and for the purpose of instructions and record keeping. Demonstrated ability to independently complete detailed tasks. Respond and report all emergencies. Skill to use related tools in the performance of carpentry projects. Must have experience in furniture repair, basic cabinetry, light framing, installation of dry wall and other wall materials, wall repair, acoustical ceiling repair, door repair and installation (use of mortising jig), wall and floor tiling. Maintain fire safety equipment. Perform setup of table and chairs and equipment setup as requested by students and staff. Skill to organize many tasks and determine priority. Demonstrated ability to maintain diplomacy in difficult situations, to maintain confidentiality, and to conduct one’s self in a professional manner. Ability to operate a motor vehicle and electric cart.

Special Conditions Required:

Must be available for some overtime and weekend work. Must be willing to respond to afterhours emergencies. Must be able to climb stairs. Must be bondable. Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
