Stanford University is seeking a highly motivated Scientific Program Manager to oversee emerging cross-disciplinary research programs and strategic communications for Stanford ChEM-H, an interdisciplinary institute focused on engineering molecules for human health. Candidates should be self-starters, comfortable with autonomy, and embrace opportunities to tackle new problems and challenges as part of a dynamic team in a start-up-like environment within the University.

The Scientific Program Manager will be a member of the Stanford ChEM-H operations team and will work closely with ChEM-H faculty fellows to implement and administer the vision, strategy, and goals of the institute. The Scientific Program Manager will bring specialized technical knowledge in biomedical, chemistry, or engineering research and will participate in strategy development, long-range planning, and partnership development for portfolio programs. The Scientific Program Manager will play a critical role in liaising among the technical and operational staff supporting emerging research programs, faculty leadership, and other key stakeholders. The Scientific Program Manager will play a critical role in developing internal and external communications for a wide variety of technical and non-technical audiences. Each day will bring a new set of objectives as you:

  • Develop and manage research and communications programs by conducting research activities, including outreach to varied stakeholders within the program, assigning resources and making program improvement recommendations that impact policies and programs.
  • Identify, recommend and implement opportunities for new research initiatives.
  • Source, collect and analyze data, create reports, review and explain trends; formulate and evaluate alternative solutions and/or recommendations to achieve the goals of the program or function.
  • Plan, coordinate and implement communication programs for ChEM-H. Develop internal and external written communications, Web and digital communications, and collateral materials and coordinate media relations programs and efforts.
  • Write and/or edit complex content for proposals, research and training grants, peer-reviewed publications, news stories, press releases, social media, newsletters, and fundraising.
  • Contribute to and inform on strategic program/entity planning and related funding and financial sustainability.
  • May advise students and/or coach/mentor others.
  • Coach and mentor program staff.

*Please note this position will require the following:
  • Occasional work on evenings and weekends.
  • Some local travel
  • Occasional overnight travel within CA and out of state.


To be successful in this position, you will bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry, engineering, biology or a related scientific discipline.
  • Two or more years of relevant research experience; or combination of education, training, and relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated oral, written, and analytical skills, exhibiting fluency in area of specialization.
  • Ability to oversee and provide basic direction to staff.
  • Basic knowledge of managing budgets and developing financial plans.


In addition, our preferred requirements include:
  • Ph.D. in chemical biology, chemistry, biology, chemical or bioengineering, or a related scientific field.
  • Research experience related to chemical biology.
  • Prior experience in technical and nontechnical writing
  • Capacity to write and synthesize materials and communicate information in a manner easily understood.
  • Familiarity with funding agencies and academic research funding sources.
