The Maintenance Mechanic reports to the Manager, Building Facilities for the Student Center Complex (Whitten University Center and Shalala Student Center). The incumbent will perform maintenance and repairs in support of the building, programs, services, and related operations. This is a skilled position. This individual must have a high degree of knowledge of hand, bench, power tools operation and of standard construction practices. This individual should also be able to perform both rough and finished carpentry work, minor electrical, welding, and plumbing repairs. This position requires close coordination, cooperation, and interaction with individuals of other trades, peer employees, customers, and University personnel, and must be able to supervise students with clear instruction and direction in completing assigned work. This position also is the primary response for “after-hours” maintenance requests. Hours will typically be between noon and 9 p.m. and will include weekends. Typical schedule will run Thursday through Monday, with days off on Tuesday and Wednesday.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Repair and paint walls and doors; install trim; build simple furniture; make repairs on windows, flooring, roofing, furniture; and make minor electrical and plumbing repairs. Perform routine scheduled maintenance on HVAC and other building equipment, excluding fire safety systems.
  • Responsible for ensuring the accomplishment of assigned preventive maintenance tasks and schedules.
  • Perform routine maintenance on all tools and equipment associated with job. Prepare time and materials estimates for jobs and keep records of it. Supervise and instruct less skilled personnel.
  • Must keep skill sets current with the needs of the working environment. Must maintain time schedules and work with varied and flexible schedules in the University environment.
  • Must have excellent people skills in order to build positive relationships with staff, customers and stakeholders.
  • Assist in or perform set-ups of equipment, furniture, and materials in support of University of Miami events.
  • Position is considered to be essential personnel and must be able to perform job responsibilities outside of normal working hours to include shift work, respond to after hour emergencies, call-backs, holiday coverages, weekends, or as required for the operational needs of the University.


REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must know how to operate a variety of hand and shop woodworking and metalworking tools, including saws, drills, etc.
  • Must have sufficient physical ability, strength, manual dexterity, and lifting ability (i.e. to lift, move, or carry 50 lbs. over a distance of 20 feet). This includes but is not limited to handling equipment for specialist crafts, carpentry, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, motors, pumps, air conditioning components, lighting fixtures and poles, concrete work, and carpentry.
  • Must be able to work in conditions which are adverse (hot, dusty, cramped, wet, dirty, enclosed); work from heights and in areas where climbing is required up to 40 feet.
  • Must have organizational skills.
  • Must be customer service-oriented.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in written and oral forms of communication.
  • High school diploma or equivalent with at least one-year experience in trade areas involved in general maintenance. Must have general knowledge of the basic principle of air conditioning, plumbing, and electricity. Valid Florida Drivers’ License is required. Any combination of relevant education, work experience, and/or certifications will be considered.
  • Must have flexibility to work day and night shifts.

Hourly range is $16 - $17
