The Facilities Technician position is responsible for all maintenance and repairs in areas of operation in the Center for Health and Well-Being and the Thomson Building. These duties include, but are not limited to, fixtures, and equipment in a variety of crafts such as HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting and locksmith. This position has been designated as essential personnel during inclement/ hazardous weather and other emergencies. Compensation for the Facilities Technician position ranges between $15-$20 and hour and can vary depending on experience and expertise. Student Health Services employs full-time and temporary Facilities positions in managerial and non-managerial roles.

Duties and Responsibilities
*Perform regular and preventive maintenance on building, fixtures, and equipment in Thomson Student Health Center, and University Health Center.

  • Performs electrical repairs, such as the replacement of receptacles, switches, light fixtures, telephone jacks, data jacks, and relamping.
    *Performs plumbing repairs such as the unclogging of sinks, tubs, and showers. The replacements of washers, valves, faucets, handles, and the adjustments of fittings. To handle all repairs in plumbing from the wall out
    *Performs HVAC repairs to include replacing filters, control knobs, cleaning drain lines, coils, and to remove and replace motor in the unit.
  • Performs locksmith repairs and replacements which include the tightening and lubricating of cylinders and lock cores, and the adjusting and replacing of door hardware such as hinges and door closers.
    *Performs carpentry repairs and replacements such as the repair of furniture and the replacement of floor tiles, stair treds, baseboards, shelves, towel bars and toilet paper holders.
    *Performs patching and painting repairs to ceilings, walls, floors and furniture.
    *Assist with moving offices and furniture when staff are relocated. Complete setups and breakdowns for Student Health Services events on campus.
    *Drive the Student Health Services vehicles to pickup and drop off facilities related supplies.
    *Maintain both Student Health Services vehicles, by taking them to USC Motor pool when needed.
    *Assist with reporting major issues that cannot be handled in house to USC Facilities Management. Consult with Facilities Management staff upon their arrival, and inform the Facilities Manager of significant Facilities issues that may impact the daily operations of the facility.
    *Assist with ordering and distributing maintenance supplies and equipment.
    *Provide ITAMS to Facilities Manager no-later-than close of business every Friday.


Skill in the use of various trade tools. Skill in making general repairs and adjustments to equipment used in building and maintenance work. Ability to work independently in a service oriented environment subject to frequent changing priorities. Ability to understand and apply University and Departmental policies and procedures.
Ability to understand and follow instructions. Ability to perform manual labor. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to use judgment and initiative to complete routine work without constant supervision. Ability to work on a ladder. Valid SC Driver’s License Required.
