The School of Life Sciences (SOLS) invites applications for a full-time, benefits-eligible Lecturer position with an anticipated start date August 2021. Subsequent academic year renewals (Aug. 16 to May 15) are contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of resources, and the needs of the unit.

The position will support The Center for Evolution and Medicine’s transdisciplinary educational program. This program advances the Center’s Precision Medicine 2.0 mission and provides innovative educational opportunities at the leading edge of biomedical research (http://evmed.asu.edu/research) for all trainees. We seek applicants committed to outstanding teaching and in particular online teaching and effective program development and administration. The successful candidate will have experience in teaching evolutionary medicine and must possess a record of teaching classes in a variety of environments including in-person classroom, laboratory instruction, hybrid, and online formats. The candidate will be responsible for the continued success of the Center’s online curriculum and innovative certificate program in Evolutionary Medicine as well. The Center’s teaching obligations include teaching 4 courses in evolutionary medicine each semester, in addition to course development and/or course format migration according to department needs. Experience with developing and teaching MOOCs is preferred. Course topics rotate each term, and include: ASM/BIO 403 ASM 503/BIO 510 Evolutionary Medicine and Global Health ; ASB 498/BIO 498 Research Design in Evolutionary Medicine; ASB/BIO 408; ASB/BIO 507 Advanced Evolutionary Medicine; ASB/BIO 250 Intro to Evolutionary Medicine; ASB/BIO 494/598 Maternal and Child Health; Evolutionary Medicine: Microbes, Medicine, and Humanity's Quest for Survival.

The position’s program development duties include managing the weekly Center for Evolution and Medicine seminar, student admissions and advising, program planning, curriculum development, and engagement with scholarship of online teaching and learning. Priority given to applicants with experience in active learning in synchronous and asynchronous learning environments. Additionally, the successful candidate will be expected to liaise with academic partners, faculty, administrators, EdPlus, MOOC contacts, and the larger education community outside of ASU.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Doctoral degree or an MD by the time of appointment

• Record of scholarship and instruction in evolutionary medicine, or related fields (e.g., Evolutionary Biology, Anthropology, Psychology), that addresses questions about evolution and human health

• Minimum 5 years teaching experience in higher education and a minimum 2-3 years curriculum/course development experience

• Demonstrated experience teaching in an online and in-person environments – specifically in evolutionary medicine

• Demonstrated experience with learning management systems and other technical tools associated with instruction

Desired Qualifications:

• Postdoctoral experience

• Publications in refereed journals

• Demonstrated experience with program and curriculum management

• Proven track record of developing and implementing courses

• Demonstrated excellence in teaching and mentoring

• Experience working in a transdisciplinary environment

• Demonstrated success of inclusive education and meeting the needs of diverse student populations and/or reaching out to diverse communities.
