About the Department:

The mission of the Department of Population Health and Pathobiology is to recruit, train, inspire and graduate Doctors of Veterinary Medicine of exemplary knowledge, skill, and character. In order to maintain the intellectual and professional climate necessary to accomplish this mission, the department’s faculty will advance veterinary medical science through innovative basic and applied research, inspired mentoring of students (undergraduate, professional, residents, and graduate), excellence in clinical and diagnostic services, and innovative extension and engagement activities.

North Carolina State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) is a dynamic community whose members are dedicated to preparing veterinarians and veterinarian scientists while advancing animal and human health from the cellular level through entire ecosystems.
With the graduation of its first class in 1985, the CVM is one of the younger veterinary programs in the country. Despite its relative youth, the College has gained international recognition on the strength of its teaching, research, engagement, and patient care efforts and is ranked 3rd among the nation’s 28 colleges of veterinary medicine in the current U.S. News & World Report survey.

Located on 180 acres near downtown Raleigh, the College encompasses 20 buildings on the main Centennial Biomedical Campus. Instruction is in three departments—Clinical Sciences, Molecular Biomedical Sciences, and Population Health Pathobiology. In addition to the four-year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree, there are programs leading to master and doctoral degrees in several areas with numerous opportunities for specialization.

Essential Job Duties:

The candidate’s primary responsibilities will focus on clinically applied teaching of swine core classes. A strong interest in teaching veterinary students is required. Guest lectures in related courses will be given as requested. Candidates may also be involved in teaching graduate student course(s). In addition to the main didactic courses, the candidate is expected to teach in 3-6 senior blocks per year and may co-develop at least one block dedicated to advanced epidemiology where students would be exposed to infectious disease study design. The candidate will be expected to develop a selective(s) as needed dependent upon the candidate’s interest and group needs. An elective will also be developed as needed.

This position will have a collaborative research component that will depend on the area of expertise of the selected candidate. The candidate is expected to interact with other food and production-animal focused faculty in the college, including the ruminant, poultry and swine groups. Opportunities exist for collaboration with the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and The Food Animal Residue Avoidance Databank (FARAD) which is also housed in the Department and affords collaborative opportunities in food animal species. Other Faculty disciplines of particular interest include global health, antimicrobial resistance, genomic sciences, reproductive physiology, welfare, virology, immunology, production medicine, epidemiology, public health and food safety, pharmacology, and toxicology.

The PHP faculty have ongoing collaborations and affiliations with researchers in the government, faculty in other universities, and the private sector. A robust relationship exists within the swine industry and PHP in NC including participation on the NCPB in an ex-officio capacity. Approximately 10% of the candidate’s time will be devoted to outreach activities includes organizing the quarterly NC Swine Vet Meetings and serving as a resource for NC swine veterinarians. The successful candidate will also serve at the attending vet for the Swine education unit (SEU) and Teaching Animal Unit (TAU).

Minimum Education and Experience:

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree or equivalent is required.

Other Required Qualifications:

The successful candidate should have experience in teaching, clinical practice, extension and have some interest in clinically relevant swine research. A strong interest in teaching veterinary students is required.

The position will also include outreach responsibilities mainly through interactions with the swine industry and managing swine health and production meetings. Collaborative research in an area supporting current research programs in the department is expected. The candidate should be familiar and/or willing to consult with alternative swine production systems.

Preferred Qualifications:

Clinical experience with swine medicine. Mentoring and educational training in swine health and production. A strong track record of teaching DVM students is preferred.
