Primary Function of Organizational Unit :

The purpose of the Nancy W. Darden Distinguished Professorship in Human development and family science is to: a) Recognize and honor a current faculty member in the department of Human Development and Family Science (HDFS), b) Strengthen collaborations and partnerships within the department and across program areas, c) Support work that has a focus on strengthening children, youth, and families, and d) promote excellence within HDFS.

The yearly income associated with this professorship can be used a) as salary supplement for the holder, b) travel and research expenses associated with his or her professional responsibilities, c) stipends for the holder’s teaching and research assistants, d) support of a part-time hire to cover a course release, e) special equipment, library books, or programmatic support needed to support the teaching, research, and service activities of the distinguished professor. All expenses are subject to pre-approval by the administration.

Job Duties :

Duties will include teaching, research, service and community engagement in the area of Human Development and Family Science.

If the recipient holds the rank of associate professor, he/she will be referred to as a Nancy W. Darden Distinguished Scholar; if a Professor, the title will be a Nancy W. Darden Distinguished Professor.

The length of the Distinguished Professorship will be 3 years and will include an award each year. It then rotates to another eligible faculty member. Interested faculty can apply after 6 years (two cycles).

INTERNAL POSTING: Open only to applicants currently employed by East Carolina University.

Minimum Education/Experience :

Only current full-time members who are tenured and hold the rank of Professor or Associate Professor (excluding those whose primary responsibilities are in administration) in the Department of Human Development and Family Science are eligible for this professorship. The person appointed shall have a record of outstanding accomplishment in an area of Human Development and Family Science as a teacher and scholar or practitioner.

Interested faculty must follow the application process. Applications will be reviewed by a committee that includes one faculty member from the college appointed by the Dean, the HDFS department chair, and the previous Nancy W. Darden Distinguished Scholar/Professor. The committee’s recommendations must then be approved by the Department Chair, Dean, and the Provost.

Applications will be due on March 1, 2021 in the semester prior to the start of the professorship.
The application must include a) cover letter which outlines your contributions to the department, b) current CV, c) proposed plan of work (see suggested components below), and d) proposed 3-year budget not to exceed $60,000.
The proposed plan of work must align with the mission of the Department of Human development and family science which is “to educate future leaders and professionals to enrich the well-being of individuals, children, families, and communities through innovative teaching, research, service, and community engagement.” Therefore, the plan of work can be related to teaching, research, service, community engagement or an integration of one or more of these.
The plan of work should include a description of your plans which may include the following:
•A general timeline for your plan
•Proposed annual outcomes and indicators of success
•Plans for possible collaborations and/or mentoring relationships
•Potential impact on the department
•Potential for a positive impact on children, youth, and families
