Position Highlights:

Technician will implement bird surveys in Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. Work involves travel to survey routes in the early morning and surveys of birds using point counts with distance sampling, and also some special species surveys using tape playback and other methods. Work involves extensive hiking and driving dirt roads, navigating with GPS, checking and entering field data into MS Excel, and extensive independent work in a desert environment. Some camping will be required and some housing in NPS facilities be provided.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Travel and hike to field sites and navigate in the field (20%)
  • Conduct point counts for birds (50%)
  • Conduct special status species surveys (10%)
  • Enter and check field data (20%)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Proven ability to navigate off trail in the field. Knowledge of GPS and southwestern birds preferred. Ability to identify birds by sight and sound and hike and camp in the field preferred.

Ability of operate motor vehicles on dirt roads, knowledge of GPS, southwestern birds, and ability to work in the field in a hot desert environment

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent, or equivalent learning attained through experience required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience with point counts and bird surveys in Arizona, and with distance sampling.
