Organizational Unit Overview:

The Department of Comparative Medicine provides housing and care for vertebrate animals used in research and teaching at the Brody School of Medicine and ECU. This includes provision of appropriate housing, husbandry, and behavioral management, preventive medicine and clinical care, technical and surgical research support, and ensuring compliance with multiple federal regulators and accreditation bodies. Facilities encompass over 70,000 square feet, and species include fish, birds, and mammals.

Job Duties :

Duties of this posion include: a. Feed, water, change caging in pathogen-free environment assuring accurate animal identification and placement. b. Autoclave (sterilize) caging, bedding, feed, water, water bottles, stoppers, sipper tubes and any other items to be used in Micro-Isolators. c. Receive, inspect, prepare identification for and transfer aseptically, pathogen free animals into properly prepared Micro-Isolators. d. Observe daily for health status of animals e. Carry out treatments as directed by veterinarians and researchers f. Change Micro-isolators using standard procedures as outlined by supervisor and as detailed in departmental SOP’s. g. Coordinate sterilization quality control (q.c.) with medical technologist. This includes labeling, notification, identifying sterilizer loads with q.c. vials that were run. h. Collect bacteriological specimens according to a predetermined schedule or on request by an investigator or the veterinarian. i. Participate in research by administering medications, collecting samples, assisting with surgery, and other project technical duties as assigned by supervisor.
Animal Care and Sanitation for Conventionally Housed Animals a. Feed, water, change caging, assure accurate animal identification and placement for a wide variety of animal species. b. Prepare and feed special diets as directed. Weigh feed before and after a specified period of time to determine the quantity eaten. c. Perform daily health checks on all animals under their care. Report any signs of health problems to supervisor and/or veterinarian. d. Receive, inspect, prepare identification, prepare caging for conventionally housed animals. e. Clean disinfect animal rooms and sanitize watering devices Help cagewash technicians in cage and rack washing as needed. f. Prepare acid water or medicated water as directed, carefully measuring the quantity of material to be added. g. Evaluate ventilation, room temperature, plumbing and light time systems for proper operation. Report problems to supervisor. h. Evaluate condition of caging, automatic watering devices, and other equipment. Make minor repairs and report other deficiencies to supervisor. i. Assist higher level laboratory animal technicians, investigators, and veterinarians with handling, restraint, and treatments including injections and sample collection. j. Carry out treatments as directed by veterinarian to include primarily observation and care if there is a health problem. k. Weekend observation and care of micro-isolator housed rodents using exacting modified sterile procedures for changing cages and treating animals if required. l. Other duties as assigned, including driving a van.

The ECU Brody School of Medicine is affiliated with Vidant Medical Center. Vidant Medical Center is the flagship hospital for Vidant Health and serves as the teaching hospital for the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University.
