Along with many of the University’s core departments, the Privacy Office is based at Stanford’s Redwood City campus, featuring state-of-the-art buildings, a recreation and fitness center, dining pavilion, and central Bay Area location, five miles away from the historical Stanford campus (see https://redwoodcity.stanford.edu).

Stanford’s Privacy Office is a high-profile team, and is one of the few departments with University-wide purview. As such, team members gain a broad enterprise perspective, assist in a wide variety of activities, and make meaningful contributions on a daily basis. Our mission is to help Stanford navigate a dynamic future in privacy by driving the transparent, ethical and innovative use of personal information.

As a Senior Privacy Officer, you will provide seasoned judgment, leadership, and subject matter expertise across the Office’s many services and programs. Along the way, you will collaborate closely with staff, faculty, researchers, and partner departments such as Legal and Information Security.

This position is eligible for full-time remote work from any location in the U.S., with periodic visits to campus once travel restrictions are lifted.

In compliance with health and safety laws and policies related to COVID-19, the Privacy Office has been working remotely since March 2020, and will continue to do so in the near future. Interviewing for this position will be done virtually.

Core Duties

  • Provide expert privacy guidance on scientific research processes, healthcare regulatory compliance, and other complex matters
  • Lead privacy assessments of projects, systems, and departments
  • Promulgate best practices through awareness and training programs
  • Lead incident response and investigations
  • Maintain the University’s privacy policies
  • Monitor developments and trends in privacy and formulate strategy accordingly
  • Develop close working relationships with key staff and faculty across the University, including legal, contracting, research and hospital compliance teams
Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree and seven years of privacy experience in higher education, health care organizations, or research institutions
  • JD degree and/or substantial legal work experience is strongly preferred
  • Background in information technology is a plus
  • Privacy and/or research certification (e.g., CIPP, CHPC or CHRC) is a plus

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Deep knowledge of privacy regulations pertinent to Stanford (e.g., HIPAA, CMIA, GDPR, FERPA, state breach notification laws)
  • Clear understanding of scientific research processes and related healthcare data compliance requirements
  • Proven track record of pragmatism, sound judgment, and balanced risk management
  • Broad knowledge of modern information technology systems and cybersecurity
  • Facile with modern collaboration tools such as video conferencing, instant messaging, document management, wikis, calendaring, etc.
  • Demonstrated growth mindset
  • Outstanding written and oral communications
