CDDRL is part of the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI), and engages in research, training and policy outreach. Its faculty produces books, articles, lectures, interviews, and policy papers; the Center organizes seminars, lectures, and other events aimed at academic audiences, the domestic and international policy communities, and the broader public. Founded in 2002, CDDRL focuses on comparative economic, political, and social development, and in the building of democratic, rules-based institutions around the world. Position SummaryThe CDDRL Communications Manager will plan, coordinate, and implement communications strategies to help publicize the work of the Centerâs faculty and programs. This will be done in conjunction with the CDDRL leadership, reporting to the Associate Director for Administration & Finance. The Communications Manager will work directly with the faculty that oversee our diverse research/practitioner programs, keep abreast of their work and communications needs, and creatively suggest ways of reaching target audiences. The ideal candidate should be comfortable working with FSI Central communications to broadcast events on Zoom, Facebook Live, and YouTube, write original content, update our website, and use CDDRLâs social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Soundcloud, and the Apple Store) to reach the broadest possible audiences. This person should also be comfortable collecting, tracking, and interpreting analytics on our website and corresponding social media platforms. The ideal candidate should also have technical and editorial experience in producing videos and podcasts, including familiarity with digital media equipment, production, postproduction, and content distribution. It would be highly desirable to submit examples of any original content the candidate has produced. Some familiarity with graphic design would also be desirable. We are seeking someone who is able to work independently, has a great vision for strategic communications and eye for design, is trained in new media tools, and shares a passion for our organizationâs mission of supporting democratic ideals around the world. They should also work well with a diverse set of actors from faculty to visiting dignitaries to students, and will be comfortable attending our special events and conferences to represent the communications interests for CDDRL. They will also represent CDDRL at weekly institute-level communications meetings and collaborate with a variety of cross-campus partners. This is a 100% FTE benefits-eligible position. In this role, you will:- Develop, execute and oversee written communications of moderate complexity, including presentations, speeches, news stories, web content, talking points, and correspondence and social media posts.
- Participate in regular meetings of key researchers with media relations needs to develop strategies and tactics for facilitating effective communications.
- Assist in identifying and maintaining professional relationships with key press and community leaders.
- Assist in preparing content for internal or external newsletters. Understand email and digital content distribution.
- Identify individuals/groups to attend and/or speak at public meetings or other events.
- Coordinate media, community or government relations and ensure logistics and preparations are handled.
- Serve as the Centerâs multimedia specialist, conducting digital media creation including: graphics, video and web content.
- Manage the CDDRL editorial calendar and collaborating with FSI and Stanford communications teams; and building and maintaining relationships with internal and external partners.
- Manage web site design, newsletters, digital content distribution; and the management of brand assets including branding framework, logo, boilerplate language and overall messaging strategy.
- Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.
- Excellent written communication skills, reporting skills, and skills in conceptual editing, copy editing, and proof reading.
- Ability to work collaboratively with internal communications groups across campus.
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills in working with a variety of people.
- Capacity to write and synthesize materials and communicate information in a manner easily understood.
- Masterâs degree in communications, international relations, or another related field.
- Experience in internal communications â cascading sensitive information, proven experience facilitating internal meetings and events.
- Advanced technical experience using digital media equipment, video production, high production value audio, and editing software: (Adobe Creative Cloud or equivalent software)
- Possess a strong media relations background with experience cultivating media contacts, building targeted media lists, and conceiving, writing, and editing news releases as well as short-form pitches.
- Ability to supervise student assistants when needed.
- Familiarity supporting donor relations - designing pitches, presentations, reports and other strategic collateral.
- Demonstrated understanding of current industry standards, trends, and technical knowledge.
- Familiarity with Drupal, HTML, and/or general website design.
- Familiarity with Google analytics; leveraging analytics to optimize online engagement.
- Familiarity with MailChimp.
