Job Summary:The Database Administrator (DBA) is one of two such positions responsible for providing technical expertise to the enterprise database environment including the development, organization, and integration of databases; the assessment and implementation of new database-related technologies; and providing Information Technology Services (ITS) with a long-term perspective on the relationship of database technology to operational opportunities. The incumbent will strive to ensure that the college’s database systems offer the highest levels of reliability, security, business continuity, and performance possible. The DBA works collaboratively to help achieve an environment that meets current, and prepares for future, business objectives and security requirements. They will train technical support and applications staff across the college to use on-line processing databases and environments to their maximum effect; provide and support tools to assist in the management of the database and transaction processing environment; provide a working model of the college’s transaction processing environment for capacity assessment and planning; and support the integration of campus systems with the Operational Data Store and data warehouse.
The Enterprise Systems Team
The Enterprise Systems team is responsible for the development, support, management, and creation of business-critical systems, including the College’s ERP system, LMS, and intranet. The team has expertise with business process analysis; data integration; scripting; platform architecture; analytics and business intelligence; and deep knowledge of specific enterprise application suites. Focused and energetic leadership helps this team thrive at providing exceptional service while maintaining a positive collaborative approach to working within ITS and with campus partners.
Information Technology Services
Information Technology Services oversees the majority of technology, audio-visual, and telephone services for Grinnell College, and provides service and strategic support through its functional teams: Enterprise Systems; Information Security; Network Services; User Services; and Core ITS Services. ITS has a professional staff of about 40 and has benefitted from significant strategic investment by the college in recent years. The college’s senior leadership team have recognized the benefits of a stronger technology presence on campus and in our remote working locations and worked hard to create and promote a collaborative culture at Grinnell College.

The Grinnell College Libraries — consisting of Burling Library, Windsor Science Library, and the Listening Room and AV collections— hold more than a million books and government documents, more than 16,000 serials, roughly 30,000 audiovisual units, and almost 8,000 e-books. The campus-wide network of computers features the latest in technology. Every residence hall room has access to the Internet, as do all campus computer labs, and wireless access is widespread.
