Position: Jr./Asst. Specialist-Technical Specialist in Energy Efficiency

California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology anticipates openings in the Specialist Series.

CALIT2 promotes research and develops technology for areas such as flexible load energy efficiency and management, biomedical, communication and networking technologies.
The California Plug Load Research Center is an interdisciplinary research unit at the University of California, Irvine that focuses on energy efficiency and related issues for plug load devices (that is, anything you plug into an electric socket, including office equipment, entertainment devices, and appliances). Our projects include developing prototypes, lab testing devices, assessing technology trends, modeling energy usage to inform codes and standards, conducting field tests and other research on user behavior, and improving utility incentive programs. We are a small, friendly, motivated team looking to expand.
We are seeking a part-time technical specialist (at the junior or assistant level) to contribute to a project assessing devices for energy efficiency codes and standards. Your job would be to help develop energy and functionality testing protocols, run energy and power testing on consumer electronics and laboratory devices, and help assess the results.
• A bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in engineering or physical science (especially electrical or mechanical engineering)
• Hands-on experience working with electronics or other plug load devices, e.g., test equipment (multi-meters oscilloscopes, data acquisition equipment), mains electricity, microcontrollers
• Basic programming skills
• A demonstrated ability to be responsible, follow precise protocols, and keep organized records
• A curious mind that seeks creative solutions and approaches
• A demonstrated ability to communicate well and to work effectively both independently and with teams.
• Experience with basic testing protocols and measures (e.g., power consumption, power factor/THD).
• Fluent with at least one programming language (preferably Python)
• Experience with energy model simulations
• Experience with automated testing using NI LabView
• Experience with and/or enthusiasm for energy efficiency and sustainability issues
Hourly rate will be $21.32-$26, depending on qualifications. The current project is funded at 50% time for two years. Depending on future funding availability, there may be opportunities to increase hours and/or extend the contract. The position will remain open until filled. The candidate should be available for a start date in May or June 2021. Much of the hands-on work requires being on-site at the main campus of UC Irvine; all employees are required to follow university COVID-19 protocols. Work from home and flexible hours will be endorsed whenever possible.
