Job Summary: The Office of Medical Education and The Department of Physiology and Biophysics at UC Irvine School of Medicine seek a faculty member with a Ph.D. or M.D. degree and demonstrated excellence in teaching Human Physiology and Human Immunology. The successful applicant will direct the Physiology course taught within the first year of medical school and contribute to the school’s curriculum reform effort. Course directorship and teaching will be his/her primary responsibility. We take great pride in having a highly cooperative and interactive faculty with consistently excellent evaluations. Thus, previous experience in teaching collegiate or medical school physiology is required.
This is a non-tenure track full-time faculty position at the Assistant Adjunct Professor level, depending upon experience, in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics.
Job Responsibilities: Design, plan, implement and evaluate all aspects of the Physiology curricular thread of the school’s systems-organized curriculum in concert with the Office of Medical Education and Department of Physiology and Biophysics chair or designee.
Primary responsibility for assuring students acquire the knowledge base, skills, and attitudes regarding Physiology that are appropriate to building the foundation for their clinical training and for their future practice of medicine.
Develop goals and objectives related to Physiology/Pathophysiology that support a broad foundation of medical skills and knowledge, as well as habits of self-directed learning. Select and develop teaching methodologies appropriate to content.
Serve on educational committees, as appropriate, to advance the school’s curricular reform efforts. Study and disseminate UCI’s contributions to medical education through publications and/or by presenting and sharing information about our curricular programs at regional and national meetings.
Ensure accreditation compliance of medical school by engaging students in community activities and publishing the learning models in journals of higher education. Assist Office of Medical Education (https://www.meded.uci.edu/) & Department of Physiology & Biophysics (http://physiology.uci.edu/) to build an innovative online medical education curriculum. UCI is at the medical education forefront to innovate and modernize the current medical education to be relevant in pandemic and post-pandemic learning environment. With the increasing emphasis to adapt and implement online model of medical education, we expect the candidate to design innovative medical education curriculum. We expect the candidate to build “peer-assisted learning (PAL)” cohorts and integrate into online education with the help of, “flipped-classroom learning”, “digital-breakout room peer-peer clinical case study discussions” and other evolving technologies to ensure engagement of medical students especially. In addition, we anticipate that the candidate will help to promote vertical integration of the medical school curriculum among students in pre-clinical and clinical training, and inter-professional education with other schools in the College of Health Sciences.
Mentor PhD students & postdoctoral fellows in the School of Medicine (Physiology & Biophysics) by developing innovative career & professional development programming in helping them navigate academic landscape as well as provide avenues for career transitions. The resources should be provided in the form of career panel discussions (Career Exploration), specific training and skills development for academic and non-academic careers via mini-courses, certificate programs (Career Training), provide avenues to gain hands-on experience via industry site visits, internships (Career Experience) and building effective methods to ensure successful career transitions (Career Transition). This training should also include online mentoring programs composed of mentor-mentee dyads with interactions in a structured learning format.
Required Skills: Proficient in teaching medical students, knowledgeable in biomedical science concepts, scientific research, productive independent academic leader with excellent communication & teamwork skills, excellent project management & leadership skills in communicating with interdisciplinary groups, experienced at building alliances, connecting students, medical professionals’ scientist and health care industry leaders
Qualifications: Candidates must hold a Ph.D. or M.D. degree and demonstrated excellence in teaching Human Physiology, managing large group of students with experience engaging them in prolonged learning using innovative methodologies.
