Nature of Work

The Department of Surgery and the CCTCARE at the University of Colorado SOM seeks candidates for a full-time (1.0 FTE) faculty position as the Surgical Director of Lung Transplantation at an academic rank (Associate, Full Professor) commensurate with skills and experience. This opportunity represents a leadership position in one of the finest institutions in the country. Further, the program is a mature, established lung transplant program with goals of growing volume and adding new therapies such as Ex-vivo lung perfusion. He or she will be instrumental in the expansion of the lung transplant program. Applicants must have an M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. or equivalent degree. They must also be board certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, or the Royal College of Physicans and Surgeons of Canada as well as meeting all requirements for serving as a UNOS qualified Surgical/Primary Lung Transplant Director. Candidates with experience in building high quality and high volume programs are most desirable. The candidate will join an established group of nationally renowned physicians and surgeons  in the Pulmonary, Cardiothoracic Surgery and Transplantation programs. In addition to lung transplantation, the candidate must have expertise in the breadth of their dedicated specialty – either adult cardiac surgery or general thoracic surgery.  The candidate will be a member of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery and the CCTCARE and will practice primarily at the University of Colorado Hospital.  The candidate will also provide independent clinical services for patients at other affiliated hospital sites including the Denver VAMC and National Jewish Health. The Surgical Director will be encouraged to participate in clinical research and to be actively engaged in UNOS-related activities and meetings and to contribute to ISHLT.

Examples of Work Performed

The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

    The primary surgeon for the lung transplant program is responsible for ensuring the operation and compliance of the program according to the requirements set forth in the OPTN/UNOS Bylaws. Inpatient and outpatient surgeries, rounding, writing orders, and hospital discharge.  Outpatient duties will include patient assessment, patient education, care coordination, and disease management.  Collaboration with colleagues, hospital and clinic staff will be necessary.  The candidate will also be asked to participate in marketing and networking opportunities with referring providers.  The candidate will also be required to teach medical students, residents, and fellows, nursing staff, and other health care providers.  The candidate will also be expected to engage in scholarly activities such as clinical and basic science research resulting in journal publications and the pursuit of extramural funding.

Professor Salary Offered or Salary Range

  • The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $275,000 - $578,000
