Departmental Overview

The Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS) is a dynamic, innovative new structure at UC Berkeley that represents a oncein- a-generation transformation. The Division brings together faculty, researchers, and students from computing, statistics, the humanities, and social and natural sciences, mirroring the cross-cutting nature of data science and redefining the research university for the digital age. Core to the Division is a commitment to examining how the digital revolution affects equity and opportunity—and building the capacity to respond to these challenges. CDSS connects the Data Science Education Program, School of Information, Departments of Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences and Statistics, the Berkeley Institute for Data Science, and the Data Science Commons. The Division is responsible for growing Berkeley's broad-based data science education program, including classes and programs serving thousands of undergraduate students a year. At UC Berkeley, researchers are advancing the state-of-the-art in data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and statistics, addressing questions that were once insurmountably complex. From advances in the core of AI and ML, to discoveries in fundamental science to applications in biomedicine and health, climate, social justice, and human welfare, computing and data are transforming how society as a whole operates. Data and data-driven approaches are impacting virtually all areas of life:
machine learning algorithms are increasingly used to determine courses of treatment in cancer immunotherapy, decide who gets access to health care, determine who might be likely to recommit a crime, and decipher the complex, heterogeneous data streams used to make predictions about climate change, even as the core of artificial intelligence is poised to help us drive our cars, vastly improve detection of cancers in medical images, and provide basic care to our parents as they age. The Senior Director will serve as an essential partner in launching the Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society and its collaborations with colleges, school, and units across the university. Reporting to the Assistant Dean, Development, the Senior Director will join during Light the Way, a highly successful fundraising campaign. With a focus on principal gifts to support computing and data science education and research across the Berkeley campus, he/she will identify new donor prospects through researching background information on potential donors and will cultivate, solicit and steward donor prospects alone or in partnership with campus leadership or peers. With the Assistant Dean, he/she will collaborate on joint efforts with fundraisers in the colleges and schools across campus and with UDAR colleagues. The Senior Director will work
closely with the Associate Provost and other campus leaders to develop funding strategies, proposals, marketing materials, as well as donor related programs/events as necessary for CDSS. Jennifer Chayes is Associate Provost of CDSS; Dean of the School of Information; and Professor of EECS, Mathematics, Statistics, and the School of Information. At Microsoft for 23 years, she was Technical Fellow and the Founder and Managing Director of three interdisciplinary labs in New England, New York City, and
Montreal.

This is an entrepreneurial assignment and environment. As such, we are seeking candidates who are motivated, aspirational, creative, sophisticated, flexible and can serve as a key advisor to senior campus leaders and thought partners. Core to the Division is a commitment to examining how the digital revolution affects equity and opportunity—and building the capacity to respond to these challenges.


Responsibilities

20% Serve as an expert development professional for the Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society, as well as campus-wide data science education and research fundraising with partner schools and colleges. Lead major/principal gifts, gift planning and/or corporate and foundation relations efforts related to data science, and interface with donors capable of making very significant contributions to the campus efforts.

15% Manage a portfolio of 50-75 major/principal gift donor prospects that include some of the most influential, complex or highest rated donors. Make at least 10 - 15 substantive contacts per month (e.g., significant moves that advance a relationship). Qualify major gift prospects and solicit gifts directly. Strategies at this level typically require a high degree of creativity, strategy, and innovation.

10% Develop, create, write, implement, and/or evaluate individualized marketing plans and/or strategies for cultivation and solicitation of major or principal gifts, gift planning, or corporate/foundation prospects (strategies typically require a high degree of innovation).

10% Present formal fundraising proposals to major donors and prospects or prepare senior campus executives to present proposals.

10% Ensure that predetermined fundraising goals are met and design and implement highly specialized program activities to achieve these goals.

10% Serve as resource for CDSS interacting with prospects, donors, staff and outside professionals to provide information, advice and counsel regarding assigned specialized program(s).

10% Create, establish and evaluate methods for building/maintaining prospect and volunteer constituencies and identify, recruit, and direct the activities of high level volunteers.

10% Work closely with senior academic leaders including deans, directors, and vice chancellors—especially the Associate Provost—to analyze needs and create strategic and long-range plans for fundraising and other advancement programs.

5% Serve as a campus convener of fund raising partners across Berkeley who represent the various academic disciplines engaged with computing and data science.

Required Qualifications
  • Expert knowledge of all aspects of fundraising strategies, donor relations and advancement communications, especially complex principal gifts.
  • Expert knowledge of higher education and in particular, STEM areas.
  • Expert knowledge of all applicable laws, rules, regulations, institutional policies, et cetera.
  • Expert written, oral and interpersonal communication skills, including advanced political acumen, to establish and maintain good working relationships at all organizational levels, with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Expert level skills in maintaining confidentiality.
  • Expert skill in making persuasive and compelling presentations of campus goals/objectives and in securing gifts.
  • Expert analytical, critical thinking, problem recognition/avoidance/resolution skills.
  • Expert project/program management skills, including skill in setting and meeting program/project goals and objectives within budget and time constraints.
  • Skills to meet or exceed fundraising goals and objectives.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Certified Fund Raising Executive
  • Expert knowledge of the campus including its vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements and infrastructure.
