Position Summary:

Aquatic Health Sciences at the Virginia Institute Marine Science invites qualified applicants to apply for the Laboratory & Research Specialist.

This position is located at Gloucester Point, VA.

The Laboratory & Research Specialist position assists in enhancing the Institute’s knowledge in infectious disease biology and management.

Responsibilities include (but not limited to):

  • Sets up in vivo experiments. Collect and process samples using nucleic acid extraction, quantitative PCR, plaque assays, or similar molecular and microbiology methods.
  • Participates in fieldwork as needed. Assist with animal care. Clean tanks, feeds fish, performs health checks. Maintain cell cultures, bacteria, and virus stocks. Vaccinates fish.
  • Performs collation of data. Review experimental results and present data in concise format.
  • Maintains accurate procedures for all protocols performed. Troubleshoots and validates new protocols.
  • Order supplies, and research specialized orders when necessary.
    Maintain equipment and troubleshoot problems. Discuss with supervisor options for equipment repair and upcoming laboratory needs.
  • Modify assay to work in this laboratory, and writes up the working procedure. Documents all findings and informs supervisor of all setbacks and outcomes.
  • Assists PI with training of lab aides, students, postdocs, and collaborators with laboratory protocols and safety rules.

Required Qualifications:

EDUCATION:
Bachelor’s degree in biology, microbiology, molecular biology, or the equivalent combination of coursework and or experience to a Bachelor’s degree in these or related subject areas.

COMPETENCIES:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of “good laboratory practice” and sterile techniques.
  • Strong working knowledge and use of laboratory equipment.
  • Strong background or knowledge in Microbiology and Molecular Biology.
  • Proven ability to prepare samples using various analytical methods including microscopy, PCR or other techniques, with the demonstrated skills to perform analysis of experimental, microbiological and PCR data and report of findings.
  • Proficiency with MS Office (specifically Word and Excel), with the ability to perform data organization.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the demonstrated ability to work closely with colleagues in a team environment as well as working independently in a laboratory setting.
  • Strong writing skills, with the ability to draft methods, and maintain accurate procedures for all protocols performed.
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs, 20 or more feet.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Demonstrated experience working in the biology, microbiology, molecular biology chemistry or related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

COMPETENCIES:
Strong knowledge of Bacteriology and or Virology.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Protocol Authorship
  • Experience Real-Time qPCR, PCR, reverse transcription is desirable.
  • Demonstrated skills in RNA and DNA extraction is a plus.
  • Fish husbandry experience.

  • This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act.
