Job Description Summary
This position works closely with faculty and colleagues, facilitating design that supports extraordinary teaching in the School's degree programs and related initiatives.

In this position you will:

  • Assist Wharton faculty in providing content to students in face-to-face, hybrid, remote, and web-enhanced courses by crafting and configuring LMS (learning management system, currently Canvas) sites with interoperable teaching tools, site templates, and related connected platforms.
  • Provide support, advice, internal troubleshooting, and problem resolution for using learning platforms to faculty, teaching assistants, staff, and students; contribute to evening/weekend on-call rotation.
  • Lead or contribute to instructional design and educational technology projects to improve learning content, faculty instruction, student engagement, learning activities, or assessment. Regularly present Wharton success stories in this field at conferences and/or in publications.
  • Design and lead delivery of training for Wharton faculty, teaching assistants, and staff on effective uses of Penn's LMS (currently Canvas), related teaching platforms, instructional design, accessibility, and universal design through consultations, workshops, and self-service materials. Contribute to related University-wide programs.
  • Lead or serve on University-wide committees supporting innovative instructional design, accessibility, courseware, or related teaching platforms.
  • Supervise contract personnel and other support staff involved in courseware delivery and related platforms. Develop training and documentation for contract and support staff.

    Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and 4 years of experience; Master's degree and minimum 5 years of progressively responsible experience in instructional design or a related field, preferred; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Higher education experience, and experience with business education, strongly preferred.
  • Deep understanding of instructional design, learning principles, and accessibility.
  • Evident skill and real passion for crafting accessible content with clear messaging and aesthetic appeal.
  • Expertise in authoring multimedia content with Microsoft Office Suite, HTML/CSS, web video, and similar tools.
  • Substantial working knowledge of LMS platforms for higher education, such as Canvas (strongly preferred), Brightspace, or Blackboard.
  • Track record of successfully leading instructional design or educational technology projects.
  • Proven interest in advancing education, including research and evaluation of new technologies and methodologies.
  • Excellent presentation, writing, project management, and customer service skills. Effective communication with technical and non-technical audiences is essential to success in this position.
  • The ability to work both independently and as a member of a team is required, as is problem solving, juggling multiple priorities, and working within set time frames.
  • Candidates must be willing and able to participate in the team's on-call evening and weekend support rotation (currently 1 week on call, 2 weeks off).

  • Preferred: Prior experience as a university-level instructor or higher education workshop facilitator. Higher education experience, and experience with business education, strongly preferred. Supervisory experience or equivalent training. Three or more years of experience working with the Canvas learning management system (LMS). Experience developing or supporting online courses. Thorough understanding of learning science principles, methodologies for evaluation and assessment, and current trends in teaching. Working knowledge of learning analytics.
