The Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) and the King-Chavez-Parks (KCP) College Day Program develop college access educational programming for K-12 students in SE Michigan as identified through the State of Michigan Workforce Development Agency (WDA) grants and Eastern Michigan University. The programs provide intensive services to K-12 students that encourage a successful transition to postsecondary enrollment including persistence towards on-time graduation in a rigorous course of study. By receiving information, access to opportunities and support, program participants gain awareness and preparedness for their short and long term educational and career goals. The position requires a strong foundational knowledge of college access and readiness best practices and serves as an educator to other professionals responsible for providing services to first generation, underrepresented students.
The ideal candidate should be available 20 hours/week. This position offers opportunities related to equity and inclusion, and student development.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Meet regularly with program participants to review academic progress and overall wellbeing/development
Assess, track and document academic progress of program participants
Develop and lead/facilitate programs and workshops focused on academic, human, and sociocultural development
Communicate and meet with various campus and community partners
Manage and update social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, etc.)
Attend and participate in campus initiatives
Additional projects related to student engagement as assigned
GEAR UP programming is often conducted off-campus. Graduate Assistants will be expected to travel between campus and event locations. Travel may be arranged for candidates without transportation. Mileage may be reimbursed by agreement.
Familiarity in working with a diverse population of students including first-generation, non-traditional, and culturally diverse students.
Proficient in Social Media targeting and communication.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) and other computer applications.
Ability to develop, promote, coordinate, and schedule regularly occurring programs.
Experience developing marketing materials such as flyers, brochures and social media postings.
Capable of expanding existing experiences and learning new tools to enhance skills.
Ability to work nights and weekends as needed.
Strong organizational skills.
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
Ability to take initiative and exhibit independent judgement.
Ability to effectively manage time and meet deadlines.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

For a full-time GA appointment, the University provides a tuition scholarship for up to 18 credit hours in each academic year (September 1 to August 31) of the assistantship.
For graduate assistants who are appointed to part-time positions and for GAs who begin employment after the start of the semester, the number of credit hours covered by the award will be prorated.
