About the Department:

The Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering (BAE) is jointly administered by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) and the College of Engineering at NC State University. The department actively contributes to the academic, research and extension missions of the University.

Essential Job Duties:

This Extension Associate position will be responsible for managing projects within the realm of green infrastructure and stormwater management.

Initial responsibilities of the position will include:

  • Assisting with data analysis for multiple green infrastructure projects.
  • Engineering design for multiple stormwater projects across North Carolina.
  • Work with property owners and contractors to facilitate installation of stormwater control measures.
  • Mentor graduate students.
  • The incumbent will also work within a team of on- and off-campus faculty and project partners. He/she is expected to liaise with faculty from other departments at NC State University. This incumbent will also team-teach multiple extension and outreach events. The incumbent will be expected to travel in- and out-of-state to complete work expectations.
    This position is dually based in Wilmington, NC, and Raleigh, NC. The principal base of operations will be determined based upon selected applicant.

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • PhD in Biological/Agricultural Engineering, Civil/Environmental Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Academic background in applied stormwater research and/or design.
  • Experience in field data collection and management.
    *Statistical analysis background/experience.
  • Journal article preparation.
  • A proven peer-refereed publication record and proposal acquisition records.

Other Required Qualifications:

  • Ability to multi-tasking, and work with municipal partners, including campus and field faculty.
  • Proficiency in GIS, AutoCAD, spreadsheets, word processing, PowerPoint (or similar), and simple water quality and hydrology models.
  • Stormwater practice design.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including public speaking experience to deliver presentations at workshops.
  • Familiarity with monitoring equipment and operation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in Biological/Agricultural Engineering, Civil/Environmental Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Academic background in applied stormwater research and/or design.

Required License(s) or Certification(s):

  • Valid NC driver’s license or the ability to obtain within 60 days of start.
  • Passed or be prepared to take the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE) exam.
