The UMKC Institute for Human Development, University Center on Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (IHD) is an applied research and training center for human services designed to exemplify the University’s goals of engaged scholarship and community partnerships. Job Description The Strategic Communications Associate II position will play a vital role in advancing the mission of the UMKC Institute for Human Development through the building, updating, and managing of websites for an expanding list of grant-funded projects connected to the institute. This role will collaborate with a team of Project Managers to design, create content, test, launch, and monitor websites. A successful member of the team will need technical, visual design, and SEO knowledge to draw people to our organization’s online presence. Responsibilities include:

    Developing user interfaces using a combination of web development applications, graphic design tools and understanding and applying industry and governmental guidelines and regulations, such as cross platform design, user testing, and ADA/Section 508 compliance.Recommend, develop and ensure that websites’ information is organized in easy-to-use, visually pleasing, and accessible waysUnderstand and apply industry and governmental guidelines and regulations, such as Web Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) while staying abreast of developments in this areaProvide regularly-scheduled, ongoing website analytics data to IHD leadership to inform decision-making regarding content additions and modificationsMonitor site security, alerts, and expiration/renewal datesImplement Search Engine Optimization strategies to increase traffic to websitesThis position will have the opportunity to supervise two student employees.
Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's Degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates will be asked to present a portfolio of their work. This may be a digital presentation of previously created websites (preferred) or physical screenshots. The portfolio should demonstrate the range of sites the applicant has worked on and show understanding of color, white space, visual hierarchy, and other design concepts.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2 years-experience in HTML, & CSS
  • Knowledge of WordPress development
  • Knowledge of SEO (search engine optimization)
  • Understanding of Web Accessibility standards
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite design software (e.g., Photoshop, InDesign)
  • Understanding of UX/UI principles
Full Time/Part Time

Full-time with a culture of flexibility for workng hours and with options to work in a blended virtual/onsite or fully virtual setting.


$19.47 to $27.38 commiserate on experience and education
