Goshen College invites applications for a full-time, 12 month appointment as Director of Instructional Design and Learning Technologies starting spring 2021.
The Director of Instructional Design and Learning Technologies is responsible for leading efforts that promote the effective use of instructional techniques for teaching and learning at Goshen College. This includes instructional design and direct faculty support. The director provides assistance and training for educational technologies as well as the development and coordination of such efforts across multiple areas of the institution. This position actively participates in identifying, planning, and implementing instructional techniques to meet existing and emerging academic needs.
This position is part of campus-wide faculty development efforts and will offer regular workshops and training. The successful candidate will report to the Academic Dean. A qualified candidate may have the opportunity to participate in collegiate level teaching if desired.
Lead faculty instructional design efforts for Goshen College online and on campus courses. This includes development and instruction of self-paced classes for new faculty, creation and maintenance of the online course template in Moodle, and regular meetings with faculty and program managers to aid in the designing, revising, and delivering courses.Assist faculty in the development of new online courses through completion of a standard training course and individual consultation. Responsible for reviewing and evaluating each online course before launch. Works with Academic Success Center to ensure accessibility needs are met in the online environment. Works with VP for Academic Affairs to create policies and set best practices for faculty teaching online.Assist faculty and departments in identifying technology solutions to pedagogical problems, attend vendor demonstrations, provide training and support, and assess outcomes of educational technology projects. Consult regularly with faculty and academic departments on projects integrating instructional technology with pedagogy.Develop, coordinate, plan, present and assess training opportunities for teaching faculty on tools such as: Moodle, Kaltura, Zoom, Turnitin, and Qualtrics. Develop, distribute and update handouts, videos, and self-paced training courses on relevant tools. Meet with newly hired teaching faculty for orientation to Moodle. Work with staff in ITS to identify training needs and to assess how technology is utilized in order to inform purchasing decisions and prioritization of training initiatives. Highlight successful projects and promote educational technology initiatives by presenting short updates regularly to faculty.Primary responsibility for the Moodle learning management system. Sets policies regarding technology upgrades and feature availability. Responsible for campus wide notifications on updates and outages. Provides support for students and faculty on Moodle problems.Work with various external and internal collaborators on instructional design and educational technology projects. This may include collaborations with PALNI library consortia, Adult and Graduate programs, the Good Library, ITS Media, and the Office for Community Engaged Learning.Regularly interact with peers at partner institutions (i.e. Eastern Mennonite University, Bluffton University, Canadian Mennonite University) regarding issues related to the learning management system and course delivery for shared courses and degree programs.Responsible for the educational technology departmental budget. Keeps detailed statistics of training attendance and support services. Creates an annual educational technology report, which informs training initiatives.Provide leadership for the Goshen College iCore initiative, including organizing the training of all first year students during new student orientation, assessing iPad use in Core courses, training all students and faculty on the Moodle assignment submission uploader, and working with GC Core faculty to implement technology tools into Core classes.Research and recommend for campus-wide adoption of the following: iPad apps, Moodle plugins, Google add-ons, web applications, ebook packages, open educational resources. Promote these tools and their applications for pedagogy and distance delivery.Guide faculty and students in complying with fair use practices and copyright law. Help faculty identify alternative, open educational resources when available. Communicate with copyright holders and publishers to purchase digitization rights when necessary for online courses.Supervise Academic Technology Assistant and student workers..
Maintain awareness of developments and trends in higher education, information technologies, and instructional design, through participation in appropriate professional activities.Serve on faculty committees if relevant and applicable to primary responsibilities.Participate in and/or lead special projects as assigned.
Education and Experience:
Masters degree required; doctoral level preparation preferred.Minimum of three years of relevant experience with a proven track record of success in the development, delivery and assessment of course and program content.Prior experience in the use and management of a learning management system; experience with Moodle preferred.Experience teaching and developing content in the online environment required, including knowledge of instructional design theories and tools such as universal design, backwards design and Quality Matters.Applied understanding of current and emerging technologies in higher education required.
Certifications, Licenses, Registrations: Quality Matters Digital Credential or similar is preferred.

Prior college-level teaching experience
Special Requirements: Must be available to troubleshoot problems outside of the regular work day, during the academic year. Will be based on campus, but some remote work is possible.
Physical Demands: Extensive use of computer and operation of normal office equipment. Mobility within the library and across campus. Reading a variety of print and online materials.
Work Environment/Environmental Condition: Mostly inside office conditions. Temperatures are usually moderate. Artificial lighting. Some exposure to dust and molds characteristic of a library environment and to chemicals typically used in office products. Must use stairs or elevators to use toilet facilities.How to Apply:
