Position: Executive Director, Berkeley Center for Law & Technology
Location: Berkeley, CA
Salary: Commensurate with experience
Anticipated Start Date: May 3, 2021
This is a two-year, full-time (100%) academic appointment, subject to renewal.

The Berkeley Law Center for Law & Technology (BCLT) invites applications for the position of Executive Director (Academic Coordinator II) with an anticipated start date of May 3, 2021.

Overview:
BCLT is the focal point at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law for curriculum development, research, conferences and workshops, and student activities on issues at the intersection of law and technology. For the past fifteen years, Berkeley has been rated by US News & World Report as having the top intellectual property law program in the country, based on its extensive curriculum and the high quality, high impact research of its faculty. BCLT's scope encompasses not only intellectual property, but also privacy, computer crime, cybersecurity, biotech, sports and entertainment law, and telecommunications regulation.

The Executive Director is responsible for the development, direction and operation of BCLT, working independently but pursuant to guidance from BCLT's seventeen faculty directors, who function as the Center's “board of directors.”
The Executive Director has full responsibility for all aspects of: raising funds to support the Center's staff and activities; creating and managing the Center's budget; planning and organizing seminars and conferences; maintaining strong relationships with sponsoring and partner organizations; developing and monitoring the extensive law and technology curriculum at the School of Law; managing the Law and Technology Certificate Program; advising law students and supporting them with a variety of career development opportunities; administering faculty research grants; coordinating BCLT's support of the Berkeley Technology Law Journal and other student-led organizations and programs.

Based on the needs of the School of Law, and at the sole discretion of the Dean or his/her designate, the Executive Director may teach or co-teach a course in the law & technology field and may supervise student research and writing projects. On such occasions, the incumbent will be provided a concurrent academic appointment in an appropriate teaching title.

Basic Qualifications (required at the time of application):
  • J.D. degree or equivalent international degree

    Preferred Qualifications and Experience:
  • Expertise in one or more areas of technology-related law
  • Familiarity with the Bay Area business and legal community
  • 5+ years of professional experience
  • Prior administrative experience
  • Prior fundraising experience
  • Managerial and organizational skills
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Initiative and a capacity to foster teamwork and cooperation
  • Strong overall leadership capability
  • Experience with events, budgets, and grant proposals
