Job Description:

The Sarah Lawrence College Visual and Studio Arts Department announces a one year, 2-day Guest Appointment with a possible renewal of up to three years in a hybrid studio/lecture course titled, The Camera / The World, beginning Fall 2021.

Some questions asked by this course are:
What are the political and social and aesthetic implications of a world in which the image may have supplanted the word as a fount of information, and concomitantly, the screen has overthrown the book as a trusted source? What are the consequences for communities that are less globally wired? Can humanism thrive in an image saturated environment? Can racial and environmental justice be furthered in a plugged-in universe? In particular, what are the ramifications of iPhone enabled ‘citizen journalism’? Course structure will entail a combination of lecture, discussion, writing, and art making.

Candidates should show enthusiasm for teaching a broad range of students with varying degrees of experience as part of a liberal arts curriculum. This position requires 2 days on campus per week and be open to working with program features that include program wide critiques, student shows, and regularly scheduled individual meetings with class members, a hallmark of Sarah Lawrence’s educational system. Underrepresented artists are encouraged to apply.

Application materials include: CV (including the names of 3 references), cover letter, and an online link that we can use to access examples of recent work.

Required Qualifications:

Requirements include an MFA or equivalent, extensive exhibition record, and two years of teaching undergraduate students.

EEO Statement:
