JOB PURPOSEThe purpose of the Associate Director for Outdoor Programs and Leadership is to provide leadership and supervision for the Outdoor Center, student led adventure-based off campus experiences, and a low-ropes team development course. This includes training and mentoring student trip leaders, managing the weekend trip program, coordinating SPOT (adventure based new student pre-orientation program), and providing direct supervision for the Assistant Director of the Outdoor Center and the Coordinator of Outdoor Experiences. This position will hold a lecturer title with the School of Medicine and teach within the OUTDOOR academic portfolio . Your responsibilities will include:- Develop, train, and mentor both undergraduate and graduate students to lead adventure-based experiences.
- Plan and implement student led adventure-based weekend trips including all logistical operations, maintaining permits and land management relationships.
- Create and review field experience documentation (i.e. trip binders, LOPs, incident reports, etc.).
- Coordinate the planning and implementation of the SPOT program.
- Provide direct supervision for full time and part time staff within the outdoor experience program area (Rental Center, Outfitting, Team Development course)
- Teach or assist in the teaching and administration of academic courses within the Outdoor Education portfolio (10-12 units per year).
- Hire and train field instructors for Outdoor Education leadership courses.
- Engage in critical analysis of student performance based on course outcomes.
- Assist with budget development and the monitoring of expenditures.
- Bachelor's degree and 5 years of employment experience in the field of campus recreation/outdoor education or a combination of education and relevant experience in campus recreation/outdoor education, leadership and team development. Advanced degree preferred.
- Wilderness First Responder and CPR certification.
- Experience with low ropes course operations, program design, and facilitation
- Professional experience with outdoor education field programs
- Strong communication skills to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences, client groups, and management.
- Advanced analysis and problem-solving skills.
- Advanced computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Advanced customer service skills.
- Relevant computer systems/technology experience.
- Understanding of financial transactions.
- Ability to ensure and apply compliance with legal, financial, and university policies and external regulations.
- Frequently sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.
- Occasionally stand, walk, twist, use fine manipulation, grasp, use a telephone, write by hand, sort and file paperwork, lift, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
- May work extended hours, evenings or weekends.
- May travel.
