Together, faculty and students in H&S engage in inspirational teaching, learning, and research every day.Department/Program Description: The Ho Center for Buddhist Studies at Stanford (The HCBSS) is a leading international center for Buddhist Studies in the School of Humanities and Sciences at Stanford University. The Center is dedicated to the promotion of both the academic study and public understanding of the Buddhist tradition. It serves to coordinate, support, and develop the university’s resources for Buddhist Studies in four general areas: academic program, research, scholarly communication, and public outreach. The HCBSS works closely with the Department of Religious Studies and other academic units of the University in the training of undergraduate and graduate students. It also provides research for individual and team projects, and often collaborates with individuals and institutions world-wide to foster scholarly communication in Buddhist Studies. The Center offers a varied program of events, including lectures, workshops, film screenings, performances, and conferences. In addition, the Center also maintains a robust YouTube channel and an informative website. The communication manager will work under the general supervision of the Executive Director and must possess and demonstrate a positive outlook on continuous process improvement efforts while maintaining a team-based and community-focused mindset. It is critical that the individual in this position exhibit the abilities to practice sound judgment and decision-making, effective written & oral communication, strong attention to detail and respectful relationship management. This individual must also exhibit a strong desire to continuously learn new job-related topics and skills, adapting to new situations, policies and procedures – the ability to translate this information into operational successes will be critical. - Research, write, and edit publications for style and substance.
- Review contents to be disseminated through website, social media channels and print publications in consultation with supervisor.
- Edit manuscripts for content, style and organization.
- Coordinate publication schedules and monitor process in consultation with supervisor
- Work within deadline of projects.
- Coordinate and facilitate publication process with speakers, writers, photographers, museums, and printers.
- Review transcriptions from lectures and edit for accuracy from transcription service and on Center YouTube channel transcription uploads.
- Establish and maintain communication with students, faculty, scholars, and external media outlets to facilitate information dissemination and promotion.
- Demonstrated understanding of the principles, terminology, procedures, and best practice of communications, public relations, and editorial content.
- Demonstrated ability to initiate and develop sources for features, news, and other writings.
- Experience conducting source-gathering and performing research for appropriate contents and media.
- Experience with copy-editing for form, content, grammar, style, and organization.
- Demonstrated ability to write effectively (writing sample will be required).
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate and work with SME on effective writing and publication to reach target audience.
- Demonstrated experience of job-required software applications: word processing software such as Word or Nisus, Adobe Acrobat, Drupal 8, and a desktop publishing program such as Microsoft Publisher 2019 or Adobe InDesign. Demonstrated ability to perform detailed work with high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
