Your opportunity:

Creative Destruction Lab (CDL) is an objectives-based program for massively scalable, seed-stage science- and technology-based companies. The program's objective-setting process enhances the performance of technical founders who learn from the insights of experienced entrepreneurs, increasing their probability of success.

Founded in 2012 at the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto, the program has now expanded with locations in Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Montreal, Halifax, Oxford, Paris, Atlanta, and Wisconsin. Since its inception, companies that have participated in the CDL program have created more than $7.5 billion (CAD) in equity value.

As the Director, Engagement, you will be responsible for all marketing and communications and partnership related initiatives and activities. You will provide guidance on CDL-Global stream specialization and expansion strategies, provide advice and leadership on node preparation, operations and reporting procedures, provide strategic leadership for the CDL-Global Marketing & Communications team, establishing annual KPIs and branding strategy, and provide strategic leadership for the CDL-Global Recruitment. This position is focused on lead generation (for partners, ventures, mentors, and schools), brand / communication (social media, blog postings, engagement, and publications including the year in review book), and guiding local marketing initiatives.

You will also be responsible for developing, building and leading a global partnership initiative to engage corporate entities in strategic alliance partnerships with CDL-Global and the CDL network. This includes, in collaboration with CDL staff and Rotman Advancement, a detailed action plan that identifies the top targeted industries and implementing the full engagement cycle to maximize the partnerships across the CDL network. You will create and manage the partnership engagement framework and work closely with Rotman Advancement to review corporate targets and develop a collaborative and coordinated approach that represents the best interests of the Rotman School of Management and the University of Toronto.

You will play a pivotal leadership role in promoting the CDL brand, maintaining open communications and alignment across the network, telling the CDL story to current and potential stakeholders, developing strategic plans and the execution of strategic management initiatives related to business development and business continuity planning.

You will foster a team-based culture, create an environment where knowledge-sharing, support, training tools, coaching and staff development ensure that service levels meet or exceed expectations and foster a workspace that encourages, recognizes and rewards creativity, innovation and excellence, and personal accountability.

Essential Qualifications:


MBA or other relevant post graduate degree; a combination of equivalent education and experience will be considered.


A minimum of five (5) years’ professional experience in marketing and communications, and leading teams. A minimum of five (5) year experience working in the entrepreneurship ecosystem, as well as experience cultivating relationships with key business and community leaders is required. Demonstrated success in fundraising, partnership development, recruitment and/or sales. Significant experience in stakeholder and community engagement and brand development and promotion. A record of leadership and vision combined with an awareness of current and emerging technology development, commercialization, and new venture development across the province and Canada.


The innate ability to readily establish trust and credibility while communicating with senior business leaders up to C-Suite level executives. A creative but pragmatic strategic thinker with strong managerial, follow-through, and implementation skills. Outstanding time management skills and the proven ability to effectively delegate and supervise teams with varying levels of experience and skill. Exceptional written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills, including public speaking skills. Highly developed problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Excellent computer skills including GSuite and Microsoft Office applications.


Strong team-oriented work ethic with willingness and ability to work independently and autonomously. Well-established and robust network including high-profile connections in the start-up / new venture community. Solid understanding of technology commercialization, start-ups, scale-ups, and new venture financial, marketing, human resources, management, leadership, and legal challenges. Highly motivated with commitment and passion in all aspects of business development and relationship management. Demonstrated respect for confidentiality and strong sense of professional ethics. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects or priorities simultaneously across multiple teams with strong organizational skills. Ability to handle ambiguity and work effectively in a dynamic and sophisticated organization. Familiarity with emerging communications technologies (i.e. Slack, Airtable, Salesforce) is preferred.
