Job Description:

This individual’s role requires flexibility, resourcefulness and ability to work in a fast-paced environment. This individual must demonstrate outstanding interpersonal communication skills and an ability to work cooperatively with many diverse groups including entrepreneurs and be able to create and support an entrepreneurial culture within a university program.

Assumes leadership roles in relevant local, state and regional organizations to promote and maintain UF’s reputation as a leader in business incubation. This includes boards of directors and/or committee roles with entities such as BioFlorida, Synapse, the Gainesville Chamber of Commerce, the Florida Business Incubation Association, the University of Florida Development Corporation, the Progress Park Owner’s Association and the Gainesville Entrepreneurial Area Roundtable (GEAR). Continues to support and promote UF’s research community as a statewide resource that demonstrates UF’s leadership in growing the state’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Oversees the administration and overall operation of both the Sid Martin Biotechnology Incubator and UF Innovate | The Hub, including reviewing and evaluating the results of program activities, ensuring that continuing contractual obligations are fulfilled and allocating resources for greater program effectiveness and efficiency. Operational aspects include personnel, operations, facilities, scientific equipment, purchasing, development and implementation of the annual budget, space allocation and incubator admissions/graduation, database management and interfacing with other UF entities. Accounting functions for Incubation Services include those functions necessary for auditing, budgeting, financial analysis, and payroll in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, UF policies and procedures, and all other applicable rules and guidelines. Department-level HR functions for Incubation Services includes hiring and termination, position descriptions, and applying UF approved employee policies, setting compensation and benefits in accordance with federal, state and UF requirements.

Serves the University’s commercialization interests in the Cities of Alachua & Gainesville by acting as a key liaison with Progress Park, the Gainesville Innovation District, city and county officials, the UF Foundation, the UF Development Corporation, UF Innovate | Ventures, the UF Innovation Office of Technology Licensing, StartGNV and local developers to assist in the formation, funding, recruitment and retention of companies for the Gainesville Innovation District, for Progress Park as well as the additional research/industrial parks in Alachua County.

Works with The Hub and Sid Martin Biotech Advisory Committees to leverage relationships and expertise for client guidance, client company selection and retention, and to ensure alignment with program goals and objectives. Supports the growth of client companies by identifying, recruiting and making introductions to appropriate advisors, mentors, investors and service providers. Advocates for program resources and re-directs program activities to adapt to changes in the operating environment including technology and funding shifts that impact strategies needed to assist clients with company creation, funding, management and graduation.

Develops current and long-term organizational goals, objectives and policies subject to approval by the AVP of UF Innovate and UF’s Vice President of Research.

Expected Salary:


Minimum Requirements:

Master’s degree in business or an appropriate scientific discipline and six years of incubation management experience, including client recruitment and retention experience; or a bachelor’s degree in business or an appropriate scientific discipline and eight years of incubation management experience, including client recruitment and retention experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of management, bioscience business incubation best practices, hands-on business experience. Experience developing and directing a university-based business incubation program.
  • Understanding of bioscience and technology startup company challenges and resource needs.
  • Experience in direct management of people.
  • Ability to communicate well and work respectfully with entrepreneurs and their companies.
  • Ability to balance the needs of small entrepreneurial companies with the requirements of a large university to create a successful entrepreneurial culture within the program.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, including public speaking experience
  • Ability to work independently, make decisions and provide guidance to staff.
  • Experience creating and managing budgets, doing statistical analysis and projections.
