Position Summary
Responsibilities will include (i) screening the virome of switchgrass field populations in coordination with microbiome efforts project-wide; (ii) identifying promising viral symbionts and developing them as experimentally tractable systems; (iii) conducting rigorous experimental studies of viral contribution to switchgrass stress resilience with consideration of interactions with switchgrass genetics; (iv) contributing to consideration of synthetic microbial communities; (v) analyzing new and existing data; and (vi) preparing manuscripts. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will report to Dr. Carolyn Malmstrom and will work collaboratively with members of the Malmstrom and Lowry Labs at Michigan State University (including undergraduate and graduate students and technicians) as well as with external project collaborators working on related aspects of microbiome and switchgrass genetics and interactions.

Required DegreeDoctorate -Virology, Plant virus ecology, or related field.
Minimum RequirementsPh.D. in virology, plant virus ecology, plant stress biology, or a related field. Research experience with plant viruses is required.
Desired QualificationsCompetitive candidates will be broadly trained in virology and plant biology/ecology; possess strong quantitative, written, verbal communication skills; and be adept with experimental plant biology and with processing and analysis of viral sequence data, including from HTS platforms. A research background in plant virus ecology; strong skills in the field and at the bench; project management experience; and a publication record commensurate with time since degree completion are preferred
